I’m sure you could say that as a blanket statement like ‘all politicians lie’. However, a lot of watches are worth their retail price; christopher ward, swatch, Casio, citizen, Hamilton & most microbrands. You could argue that Rolex is worth over their retail price (for most models) because people are willing to pay that. I actually think Rolex at RRP is very reasonable for most of their steel models.
From a watch reviewers perspective. I have owned three grand seikos, last year I even went to Tokyo and the seiko museum. I visited the main flagship seiko store and the GS boutique in Ginza (where seiko was founded). Tried on a number of them, most not even available in the US. I’m guessing I have seen more in person than the average collector.
I agree with the OP here, they are not worth their retail price in my opinion, the ones that go up in value are the exception not the rule. Buy preowned and don’t overpay for them. They drop in value preowned worse than any watch I have ever tried to sell.
I have an upload on the channel about the GMT GS I owned and why I disliked it. I’m also working on an upload ‘7 Reasons why GS is not better than Rolex’. Should have it uploaded next week.
I think the only GS I would consider again is probably the snowflake or derivatives in that titanium case.
For me, a quartz traveler GMT makes the most sense. Less messing about setting the date and easy to move the hour hand without effecting anything else.

Also the capacitors only last 10 years max is my understanding, most people don't bother getting them serviced or know Seiko still will do it. Here is a photo I took at the Seiko Museum in Ginza Tokyo of their Kinetic section earlier this year.
I don’t usually plug my YT on here but this was a great livestream we just did. If anyone was not able to make it to the British Watch & Clock Mak...
