Exceptions to "No one cares about your watch but you"

So... the old adage: No one cares about your watch but you. Except, when they do. Do you have any stories of your watch getting the attention you secretly know it deserves?

A few months ago, I had a meeting with the CEO of the company I work for. Standing right next to me (to my left), I was showing him some photos on my phone (work-related) when I noticed he was getting fidgety and distracted. I got worried that I wasn't impressing him with what I was showing him. Finally he asked, "What's that on your wrist?" pointing to my watch.

"It's an Omega," I said, showing him the Seamaster Pro. He actually reached down, gently grabbed my arm and studied the watch up close.

"Nice," he said, then showed me his watch. "I've got a Tissot. Obviously, no match for your Omega."

good story, none of my work related client or coworker interested in a watch. most of them wearing a smartwatch

·

Leaves meeting:

CEO : ‘I’m clearly paying my employees too much….’

What have you done!

Great choice of watch on both his and yours :)

·

Oh and none of my colleagues wears anything of note, sadly. Occasionally a member of the wider business has a Breitling or TAG… I did see a Speedie once but that’s about it.

My friends aren’t into the hobby either and think it mad that I spend money on these wonderful and divisive things :)

Store of value or expensive trinket - or both?!

My staff is slowly getting infected by my hobby. I've heard at least two of them had been asking around for watches to buy in the weeks leading to Christmas. I actually called them out on the fact that they didn't come to me for advice and instead went to a person I know knows nothing about watches. One of them jokingly said she didn't want advice from me because I would've probably suggested something that's waaay over her budget. She was not wrong. The other one said practically the same thing: that she didn't want to spend over 100 USD.

I think they're learning the wrong lessons from me.

I mean you can get some OK watches sub-100, if you want good/great, you’ll need to increase the budget.

Which SMP do you have?

This one.

My friends’ two-year-old girl rolls up my sleeve every time she sees me to see what watch I am wearing. She particularly loves my SMP because of the clicky bezel. Does that count?

No one cares about your watch except your friends' two-year old girl. Counts.

I’d say yes :)

I’ve had three watches noticed/commented on in public.

  • Black bay 58 checking the time on a chairlift, “what is that, a Rolex?”
  • Unimatic UC1 picking up food delivery, “what is that?! Sorry, you don’t have to tell me.” Delivery guy had a seiko on a nato and was in to watches
  •  Black bay gmt in line at the post office, “is that a Rolex? Can I take a picture of it?“ Guy was a little off but I wasn’t going to lose my place in line at the post office so I told him it was a Tudor and let him take a picture of the watch in my wrist

Usually, only my AD cares.

·

The only time that anyone noticed I was wearing a watch was because it was a part of a whole 'package' - all suited up, (Barney style :)), nice coat etc... But that's how I learned how niche and insignificant 'world of watches' is - their question was 'is that Rolex?'... No... (it was my Hamilton Khaki on brown leather straps :)). Normal people do not care... The same way about electronics... There is 'iPhone and the rests', there is 'Tesla and the rest'...etc... That's why it's such a cringe when I see the commercials for 'fashion watches' where they try to convince you that 'people will stop you on the street to ask you and complement you on your watch'...No, they won't... When I wear my Cronos which looks like Rollex from 3+ feet away - did anyone EVER stopped me? No, so they won't stop me because Filippo Loreti :).  Conclusion - wear what makes YOU happy, NEVER try to buy/wear something just because someone insists it's a 'symbol' of 'social status' or something....

Love this! Sorry I don’t do emojis. I’m a snob that way.

About a year ago, a colleague of mine who had started recently noticed my Islander #ISL-134 and commented how much he likes the dial. Found out he is a fellow watch nerd. He liked the #ISL-134 so much he bought it from me. Just saw him wearing it Thursday. 😁

I think that's the first angry comment I've read on Watch Crunch. I re-read your @brunofrankelli comment again to see if I had missed something. I didn't think you said anything that would warrant an angry response. Oh well, we all have our moments.

A friend of mine said something quite relevant to this: some people actually make an effort to waste their time to tell you your content is a waste of time instead of, you know, not wasting their time. Oh well.

Are you saying that I've wasted my time commenting on your waste of time of having to comment on someone wasting their time to tell you that they've wasted their time reading the original post? 😜

·

I never get called out on my watches but a manager at work who recently bought a ceramic bezel sub said while taking public transportation home, some guy was staring at his wrist. In NYC these days that’s really uncomfortable. He doesn’t wear it to work anymore. But me, I used to wear my 4-digit GMT Master everywhere - nobody ever commented.  Maybe they thought it was fake! Still to this day, I never get comments on what I wear.

Yes, yes. And now I'm wasting my time to comment on your waste of time of having to comment on my waste of time to comment on someone wasting their time to tell me that they've wasted their time.

Can I queue up?

Image

Hell yeah! Up top high five five!

·

Sadly, no, no matter how much I roll up my sleeve and flick my wrist in everyone’s direction.

And I creeped out the TJ’s cashier by stanning his vintage Seiko diver, which to him was just…his watch.

·

I’ve been complimented three times with this fun little SRPH 33. Ironic because it’s probably the least interesting watch I have from an enthusiast stand point. And I have some decent low-end pieces: no one have ever notice my stunning Seiko 5 gmt, my Hamilton, my sweet Bambino, my Bulova hack watch. But that orange and black Seiko 5 seems to be the one turning heads.🤷🏻‍♂️

I had a doc at work ask about my Vaer field watch on a green rubber strap. He said it reminded him of something he’d seen online. As he looked up a picture on the internet, I admired his Hulk. What he eventually showed me was this:

Image

I don’t know if that counts as the attention my Vaer deserves, but it was certainly interesting. And a good lesson on how different people view money.

How do you perceive he views money as compared to you? Sounds like he admired and was interested in your watch, had seen a similar patek and just wanted to share. Seems somewhat harmless to me but maybe I am missing something about your interaction. Curious because I am a doc and would hate to come across as an elitist unintentionally.

·

One time a co-worker with a Casioak said sweet watch to my GS SBGA415 and asked what it was. I said ”oh just a regular Seiko”

”dude, i know a GS from a Seiko. im asking for the model number”

i was aghast.

we have been seen

An acquaintance once commented on my GS SBGX261 as one of the most beautiful watch he had ever seen. It was shiny after all.. acquaintance was using a quartz Tag, made sense.

another time a lady friend noticed my Exp 1 and was enamoured by it. She was using a DW

I have no negative feelings about our interaction at all. I enjoyed talking watches with him and remember his ability to remember the names of people he’d just met, and effortlessly connect with them. Ive never met anyone who was so good at remembering peoples names and what he’d talked with them about, while being absolutely genuine. Someone joked with him about his positive attitude and he replied that he was like that all the time even though his wife sometimes got annoyed with him about it. He was a genuine person and I’m glad he didn’t waste himself on politics.

I just thought it was funny to compare my $400 watch with a $400k watch. And I’m speaking of him in the past tense because we don’t work together anymore, he’s not dead.

As for seeming elitist?  People who are worth knowing will judge you fairly, ust ignore the ones who don’t. And be nice to your nurses😂

·
brunofrankelli

Wow. That got toxic really quickly.

I wonder if this comment was triggered by your post implying that Tissot wearer's feel inferior to Omega wearer's.

Anyway, where I work people are only interested in your watch if they can sell it after they've mugged you 😂 So best not to stand out.

Gotcha. Sounds like he was paying you a great compliment. Whether it costs $400 or $400k, these little devices just sit on our wrist and tell time imperfectly and are 99.9% the same things to the vast majority of people. I do make sure to give the staff I work with regular bonuses, even though we are all hospital employees. Cheers!

I’m sure the staff appreciate bonuses, and I’ll spare you a tirade on how the hospital should be the one giving it to them. I don’t know you, but the fact you’re wondering about what the staff thinks of you tells me they probably like you. Cheers.

Great bonding moment :) This makes a hell of a difference to his perception of you .  Congratulations

·

Congratulations! Your Omega got stories that only a watch can add to your life experience. It may be a small moment. But nobody can take that away from you!
