Escapement Room #8: Joy of the Daily Vintage

I haven't written anything in the past few weeks. Life got in the way.

Anyway, some folks are quite hesitant to wear vintage as their daily driver because there's this unfounded notion that vintage watches are too fragile for daily wear. I discuss that at the Escapement Room.

Here's the article.

A very good friend had finally returned from his latest assignment in São Paulo for the Can Civil Service was anxious to display a few of his vintage Rolex watches that he sourced from a local collector. It was a nice sample of a generic steel Rolex diver in an early(50s) oyster case later than the bubble backs. I used to actively collect vintage watches so my friend was keen on hearing my opinion. We met for coffee, sometime after I received an angry text from my friend. Apparently the acrylic crystal had fallen off when he kept the watch in his trouser pocket after showing me his new prize. The lens was still in his pocket but a few indices were missing from the dial. Guy said that no harm would have occurred if he did not venture out with his Rolex, lol. Not saying you shouldn’t wear your vintage watches but sh!t happens.

I wear my sole vintage watch often and don’t worry about it. I like the mid-20th Century design aesthetic and recently wore it as my only watch on a Caribbean cruise. What was the point of having it serviced if I don’t wear it?
