Pelagos 39 Vs U50

I want to add a diver to my collection that I can keep for the rest of my life. These 2 watches appeal to me the most for different reasons.

I like the Sinn because of its unique design and use of tegemented steel. It’s a watch I wouldn’t be afraid of taking anywhere or doing anything in.

I like the Tudor because it has a slightly slimmer diameter, classic design, lumed bezel, t-fit clasp, and light weight.

Between the two I think I like the Tudor better, but I worry I would end up babying the thing because of how much easier it would scratch and higher cost.

I’d like to hear other people’s opinions who have either watch or both.

Wow, that’s a tough one. It’s really down to you deciding which is more important, utility or style. For what it’s worth, I really like both and would have the same trouble you’re having if I had to choose.

I would go Tudor.. For the better movement and power reserve.. Sinn have a well regulated Sellita in them but the power reserve sucks

·

I had a Sinn 556 and was disappointed in it. I’m not saying they make a bad watch but I think the Tudor is way more versatile. I wouldn’t worry about scratches. They are going to happen with any watch. It’s part of the game.

I love the hands on the Sinn U50, but it’s precisely that what makes it to be a bit “out there”. The Tudor is a bit more versatile, with a thousand times tried and tested design language that will always be a classic.

I’m all for the Tudor and I think it’ll look better all scratched up to be honest. I think that a watch meant to get a bit worn looking. I feel the same about the Sinn I guess but I do prefer the Tudor.

Would struggle to choose for the exact same reasons as you. I do intend to get a German scratch resistant steel watch sometime.

My brother and I share the LHD Peli and I really like it and I think the 39 will wear even better. Earlier this year I was also thinking about the U50 SDR and the newer grey one but with the recent price increase I moved on and discovered the Seiko MM reduced line and loved the case design and bought myself a night diver model 🥳

The Pel

My vote is: The Tudor looks better, but I wouldn't buy any watch that I'm afraid to wear. If I won't wear it with daily life, then it's out of my price range even if I can afford it.

I don't own either but do have the Sinn 556I and the Tudor BB58. Between the U50 and the Pelagos 39 you have no bad choices, so it comes down to personal preference, budget, and what else is in your watch box (ie how important is the watch's versatility to you). If it were my money, I'd to with the U50 since I don't have a Sinn dive watch.

That said, I voted for the Pelagos 39 for a couple of reasons. First, while it is every bit a tool watch the Tudor is, I think, the more versatile design. It can carry itself in a wider variety of situations without looking out of place compared to Sinn's no holds barred industrial tool watch aesthetic. Second, movement. If accuracy is important to you, the Tudor MT5400 is a certified chronometer. The Sinn's SW300 is a great movment (have one in a Monta Triumph), which I believe is a Top grade, so very well regulated. But between my BB58 and Sinn 556I (with a Top grade SW200), the Tudor is more accurate, with a better power reserve to boot.

On the flip side, U50 wins based on total cost of ownership (purchase price, future servicing costs). And is a far more unique looking timepiece than the Pelagos 39. If I were going diving, or was gonna be "haze gray and underway" so to speak - I'd pick the U50 over the Pelagos 39.

But enough of my rambling. Let us know what you decide, and pics when you get it!

I'd go for a Tudor as my first premium to luxury diver. More versatile, classic looks (it wears and looks like a Submariner 14060 with a different dial and rehaut). That T-fit clasp on the 39 is also very useful.

Sinn has the build quality and unique design advantage and by buying it you can feel the joy of being a watch nerd
