Been having this idea in my head for a while...

Here in the UAE (and many parts of the gulf part of the Middle East) we have a traditional basket weaving called Khous (خوص) I wanted to try make straps in the same colors and style. Obviously I couldn't exactly use palm tree fiber to make a single pass strap so I went with paracord. I'm not entirely happy with what I've made today but it's a start and I plan to make something far more refined than what I have here. It was a fun little evening nonetheless.

That’s super cool! Not bad for a first try right? Keep it up, I bet you can play with color with this stuff forever.

Definitely the first successful attempt, I've failed miserably in the past lol. Thank you, I really need to figure out how to get the weave to be tighter and with a better color combination

·

Dude, that is pretty awesome 👏

·

Great first effort, nice idea for making your own strap designs!

·

Leather weaving would be awesome. Good stuff fellow middle eastern 🤘🏻

·

I think you did a good job. I would love to see someone try to do a fiber weave strap.

·

Wheb you manage to perfect this it could be a cool side business :D I would buy in blue and white 😅

Beautiful habibi!

That is a good start! Cool project, I can see how it will come together. 👍🏽

I work with rope and paracord in my business and so I'm thinking about how I'd approach this project... Maybe a paracord with fewer inner strands might be easier to work with and less prone to rolling once it's been hollowed out (like 5 strand, not milspec 7 or 9). Another option would be to pull all but a few inner strands or use a microcord. A flat, thin leather thong could work well too! Either way, something that doesn't crowd the width of the buckle as much and holds its own shape well will be more pliable for a flat weave.

The pattern is awesome though and I like the alternation! So many fun things you can do with color tracers! This has me thinking about making a hollow rope watchband. 🤔

·

Excellent! Looks great! I like knots and fancy work, too, and watch bands are very challenging! Good job!

·

Looks really good, you could always try this style.

Maybe use a paracord since it's round it's easier to get tighter cuz you don't have to worry about the direction it's facing. But it will be a lot thicker

That's a really nice way to incorporate your culture into your much loved hobby.

When I see Khous weaving, I'm reminded of perlon watch straps.

I think it'll lend itself well to a thinner weave.

·

Very cool you may end up starting a trend !

·

Awesome! I love the look of it 😁

·

Nice idea, that looks pretty good already!

·

Nice Idea, very cool.. 😉

·

That is both very cool and creative! Keep on experimenting - you'll be selling them at some point!

·

Great god that’s so amazing, maybe share how to do it because I also want one

·

That's so cool 😎

I was just following a paracord tutorial video, there's a bunch of them on YouTube

·

What a fantastic idea! Mabrouk!

I have spent a significant part of my life in GCC countries, living (as a child) and working (as an adult), and I know how important it is to maintain local cultures and traditions. I was last in the UAE for the 15th anniversary weekend of The National newspaper in April 2023. It was great to be back.

You may have the seed of an interesting business idea here...

That's amazing

I was actually hoping to find some perlon tutorials online but there aren't any from what it seems. I would definitely want to work with something a lot more intricate and thinner because these paracord strands are not cooperating the way I want them to
