My daily set of watches

Good day, gentlemen. I’m a newbie both here and in the world of watch collecting as well. So please do not judge my words and collection too hard.

As an officer in an active service (Ukraine Defence Forces), I was transferred to a desk job last year after a few injuries. Being able to live at least half-ordinary life since then, I’ve got into hobby of watch collecting. As you might understand, there are not too many options to get your hands on some real high-end pieces. However there is still a strong chance of finding some interesting stuff both in local retail and on OLX (local equivalent of eBay). So, for the last year I’ve invested quite a time and some money into my vision of a mandatory set of watches a gentleman should have:

  1. A daily driver

  2. A sceleton

  3. A diver

  4. A pilot

These 4 in my opinion are covering any occasion. So, my annual goal was to get myself such a set and make it as good as possible without spending some astronomical amount of money.

After some research and a few hours of watching some nerdy YouTubers, I’ve developed a rule for my collection:

No DW-like crap, no quartz, no fakes.

Following these rules lead me to my current collection:

  1. Hamilton jazzmaster with a blue view matrix dial as my daily driver

  2. Ingersoll the jazz as my sceleton watch. I know, I know. Not a match for a Hamilton. But for a buck there were other options

  3. Tissot seastar 2000 (2023 version) as a diver

  4. Bulova A-15 as a pilot watch.

As for now, I’m happy with this humble set. The only piece I’d definitely like to upgrade is a sceleton for some obvious reasons.

So please let me know if what you think of my set. Am I moving in a right direction?I

Thank you! Doing m best to avoid some typical(?) mistakes with fashion brands, Aliexpress watches and quartz. Currently in search of a decent replacement for Ingersoll the jazz, as it in my opinion doesn’t keep up with my other pieces

Thanks! I think I’ve dodged not only a few russian bullets out there, but also a typical mistake driven buy a local post-soviet mentality out here. I didn’t set my foot on the path of fake Rolexes and Omegas. Fakes are still crazy popular here in Ukraine. Not my choice luckily.

Welcome to WatchCrunch! Nice collection and good rules to guide you in your collecting!

Though I must say, keep an open mind on quartz, it's not all bad. 😄

Thank you!

As for quartz - I’d consider only Bulova Lunar Pilot worth buying. It might be only me, but I see quartz through the prism of dirt cheap but yet accurate watches, responsible for today’s sky high prices on a decent mechanical pieces.

Yet, Lunar Pilot is a fantastic watch for sure.

Anyways, I’m sure it’s just me being too stereotypical and harsh on quartz.

You're welcome, friend. Be safe and remain vigilant during the ongoing war💪 It's better to hear that you have been able to avoid the pitfalls of counterfeit watches. Avoiding these imitations and dedicating your attention to authentic timepieces is an intelligent choice for cultivating your collection.

When you prioritize authenticity, you can be confident that you're investing in exquisite timepieces that will bring you both delight and enduring value.

A year ago it was more like this to me. Since recovery (it took me a bit longer then a month) and getting my actual still military, but yet a desk job, I’ve got an absolutely different sense of time. I’m glad living yet another quiet (or not so quiet during russian missile attacks) with my family. Doing my best to remain civilized.

That’s a place for me to share thought on my watch collecting hobby then :). It’s hard to overestimate the value of such a community. Especially while my country is going through the biblical scale shitstorm of war. One of the few places for me to restore peace of mind and have a friendly chat.

Salute and my high respects to you, sir. I'm glad you're feeling better and in a more stable situation now. Recovery from challenging circumstances can often bring new perspectives and a renewed appreciation for the present moment. It's good that you're trying to stay civilized and maintain a sense of normalcy, even in the face of potential difficulties like missile attacks. Your focus on family and living to the fullest is truly inspiring. Keep staying strong and cherishing those quiet moments with your loved ones.🙏

Yeah, PTSD is a new reality to deal with for the rest of my life. So, as my psychologist tells, I need some points to focus on. As nights and dreams are my enemies from now on, I’m doing my best to fill the days with purpose and some pleasant moments.

Andrii welcome! There is no "right" direction in collecting watches, IMHO. That is the beauty of it. Ask for advice, but in the end, the choices are yours. If you like it, then it is right. FWIW you have made some nice choices so far.

·

Welcome to the Crunchdom! That's a sterling and interesting start to your collection you have there. Have fun and enjoy!

·

Welcome to WC. Even though I personally have a huge preference for mechanical watches, I would suggest that you don't dismiss watches simply because they use a quartz movement, especially the high end thermally compensated quartz movements such as the Seiko 9F or the Omega 5619 (as found in the Speedmaster X-33 Skywalker).

·

Welcome...and you have an excellent start in your collecting journey....Thank you for your service to your country🙏

·

Respect man. Try to be safe and all the best for you and your family !!! 💪

Great collection !

First let me say

Question, what is DW like crap? Maybe it's lost in translation. You have a really nice collection. Cool watch winder too

DW - Daniel Wellington. I think it’d already become a meme among watch enthusiasts. It is a perfect definition of Chinese rebranded cheap quartz marketed as a fashion brand watches.

·

Think of quartz like a foreign food you have never tried before. You can't knock until you have tried it for yourself 😉

Will follow your advice. Thanks, mate

Definitely not a fan of overpriced drop shipping. I just can't group all quartz in the same bubble. 3 out my 4 watch collection are quartz. So I may be a little biased 🤣. Enjoy what you love and enjoy this crazy world of horology.

No denial - I’m a fanboy of automatic movements. However, there are decent quartz calibres for sure. DW on the other hand is surely not one of them :)

Working on getting my second automatic myself 😁

"No DW-like crap" this is one of my important rules in life.

Yep. Wearing DW and similar “fashion” bullshit is like trying to justify having a diner of Pringles and some cheap filtered beer sitting in the middle of an Italian restaurant on a daily basis.
