Worst watch purchases

The watch community here is largely positive and that’s great. I mean this post to not be negative in a sense of “anyone that likes this watch sucks” but just a “hey you know I bought this and it was terrible for me or never really clicked because xyz “

As picture is this timex in which the reference number escapes me but I really liked the design of the case as it felt great on wrist.

Always good to have a quarts in the collection and plus a perpetual calendar!

The best part was the duel time bezel… or so I thought. It’s a friction bezel with far too little friction. Good luck setting that extra time zone when the bezel would move at the brush of a sleeve.

I fixed that issue using the dental floss trick.

This lead me to the main problem of the watch…. (Who already spotted this?)

The 24hr bezel is useless on a 12 hour watch. I thought surely there was a trick to it that I hadn’t learned. Try as I might it never worked. But I had seen this combo at a glance many many times with the “modded” seiko community . I can understand them doing it as a personal choice someone is making to do to their own watch for an esthetic but why would a professional watch company make such a product with a useless feature was beyond me.

whats your thoughts or storys?

Other companies have done the same thing and more, like having a tachymeter scale on a non chronograph.

Budget watches are all mostly designed for form over function.

It's only a bad purchase if you were expecting something that isn't there.

I didn’t break the bank here. $20 used. yeah the useless tachymètre thing lol looking at you fossil. It did just let me down as I do like timex. They sometimes do disappoint. I’d rather pay more for something correct but I know we are not their main targets.

I was seriously considering buying a Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris with the internal bezel and like yours it was just too loose.  No way would I consider a home remedy like what you did on a new watch of that price so I passed and bought a Berny, lol.

Now that’s surprising! I love JLC and to think the bezel was such a let  down… too bad. A  Berny?

Yes, The Berny is hands down the best watch I have ever owned for under $100.00.  Although I would gladly pay them another $50.00 for a Miyota 9000 series movement to replace the 8205.

I’ll look into it. I’ve never heard of the brand

It's fine to hate a little sometimes, it just means you got PASSION 🔥

That bezel is so stupid 🤣 I also find "divewatches" with fixed bezels hilarious.

my worst watch is maybe the one I wear daily, the smartwa.. er fitness tracker

I bought this pretty cheap on eBay about 12 years ago, and wore it for a couple of those, but I don't know how. It's flat, and wears like a dinner plate. LtL is approaching my maximum, and doesn't allow for a variety of straps. It's not comfortable on a leather strap, and NATOs/ZULUs are too bulky and awkward. This MN style band is probably the most comfortable to wear it on (I should get one in a color more suitable...olive/red, perhaps?). Cheap ETA quartz, so the seconds hand rarely hits any of the indices, and the lume is pretty sorry. The mineral crystal is really scratched up now, and I had removed the cyclops because it was totally scuffed. As a result, the date window is very small, and looks silly. I'm thinking about either putting a new crystal in it and trying to sell it for a few dollars, or maybe keep it and grind off the crown guard for a new look. Maybe not my worst watch purchase, but one of them. I wear it about once a month for a little while, just because. It's actually my WRUW watch for today.

I think grinding off of the crown guards would be a mistake, but I don’t know your skill level. As you said could be worse!  Thanks for sharing

That's not a watch so it doesn't count, try again.😂

I bought a DIY Watch Club kit to try my hand at assembling a watch. It was sub-$400 which seemed like a good price because you get the experience and the watch but I get 0 enjoyment out of wearing it and there's just no way I could sell this so it's kind of just garbage.

I also bought a blacked out Seiko 5 Sport and that is impossible to read. I learned that legibility is a factor to consider when buying watches (and trying it on instead of relying on photos).

The last one is not the fault of the watch, but my psychology. I bought a Seiko Presage SRPB77 because I was tired of waiting for a Rolex Datejust and wanted a white dial. But in the back of my mind, I always knew there was no future for this watch in my collection and that mental block kept me from ever wearing it. That taught me to plan ahead and only buy the pieces I love. However, I was able to sell it and am thankful for the lesson.

My dad has a shop full of tools, and I've done stuff like this before. I think it could be managed easily enough, but I don't know if the effort would be worth it. It would still wear uncomfortably.

I’ve actually already read your review. I very much enjoyed it although it sucks you had such a bad experience. Great read though.

I really like the look of the DWC-do2. im Sure you could sell it. A least recoup some costs.

Ooo!  I have a DIY watch club watch as well!

It is a prominent member of the seldom on wrist club.

While it's shady provenance limits my love, on a over the top white band I don't feel quite as ambivalent as I did originally.  Now it's got a cool white on silver on white vibe that will look perfect in incredibly rare situations where that look is desired.

My fully and wholly dumb watches my super old ones that I had no taste when I chose.

Here’s my addition, a Citizen Stiletto, worn so rarely I don’t even have a wrist picture.  It’s the top middle watch in the case.

i dare not entice you further by mentioning the rm052 skull….

I have one similar to your Timex; an Ochstin 24 hour dial with a 12 hour movement!🤣

I actually saw another Bomberg for Dia de Los Muertos that almost bit me again - if it had been more masculine looking I think I might have fallen for it since it's running an automatic Swiss Sellita movement. The Swarovski crystals on the strap were a bridge too far - even for me.
