Opinions on wearing luxury watches at the gym or during sports?

I’ve had this question looming in my mind over the last 6 months and I’ve gone back and forth. Now that I own 10+ watches with 3 of them in the $1k+ category, I’m curious on how many people rock their nice watches at the gym or during sporting activities versus wearing their beaters.

I have a handful of Timex watches that are my typical go-to for work and outdoor stuff but I can’t help but rock my nicer watches too. Why have them, especially if they’re made of better material, and not wear them out for such occasions?

I’d love to hear your responses!

I just wear what I feel like at the moment or to match an outfit. The only exceptions are if I am swimming or doing outdoor work. Then I’ll wear a dive watch and a subverting I don’t mind getting too scratched up.

C. I don't work out! kidding, I wear the beater 👍

Too many opportunities to f*ck my watches up…gshock

Do I want to be in the company of this clown shoe who not only wore luxury watches at the gym, but they were client watches he was supposed to be selling? Firm no. Don’t take it in, or get a real padlock like a higher end Abus or Abloy.

Otherwise, that’s what smart watches are for.

Unless youre tracking calories, distance, intervals etc. why do you need to wear a watch to the gym? Especially a nice one that likely won’t have the tools to track things.

If it’s not a tool on your wrist, you’ll just end up looking like the tool trying to flex at the gym.

I don't see sport watches as luxury watches. They are just expensive. I wouldn't abuse a luxury item, and wouldn't wear a pricey sports watch.

I prefer less weight while working out, so would wear Apple Watch, G-Shock, etc for those sessions. If it’s just walking then I don’t care.

Between the consigned watch, stupid trucker hat, or the fact coach set up a camera to take a workout photo, I am not sure which is more cringeworthy.

It's unnecessary risk to me. I wear all my watches, anywhere except yard work or the gym. If I'm focused on those tasks I'm not enjoying the watch on my wrist anyway.

Cardio - ware anything

Swiming - ware any diver

Weights and machines - beater

Doing DIY - beater

Washing the car - rubber (don't want to scratch the car)

Why have a collection and not pick the best one for the job?

That last sentence hits on what bugs me about this. If one just wears their Datejust or Tank or Nautilus everywhere, great. That's jaded nonchalance. But if one has something better for the purpose, why are we choosing a worse tool for the job?

It depends. I don't go to a gym but workout every day at home, so the flex is not an issue in my situation. There are some workouts that just don't feel comfortable for me with a watch on (plyo anything, or kick boxing), but others like strength workouts (Insanity, Peloton, etc...) they feel comfortable. And for most of these I'll wear my smart watch (Tag Connected) to track my heart rate.

Wore my first Rolex deep sea fishing and jet skiing.

Wore my Omega diver deep sea fishing and swimming.

If I buy it, as long as it can handle the water risk, I am going to wear it.

Luckily we live in a society where everyone can ware what ever they want, whenever they what, doing what ever they want (just made a new drinking game tongue twister, so thanks for that).

So if someone wants to ware their cartier tank swiming they can (wouldn't recommend it though). There are no rules to this lovely game, however, I may have phrased my last post rather clumsily. Having a collection simply affords you the flexibility to appoint a better a tool for the job, not that you have too of course. If you want to select a hammer and nail rather than a dril and screw, then you go right ahead 😁

I personally like to wear chronographs to the gym to track my rest times. Depending on what I’m working out that day, it’s anywhere from 1.5min to 3 min.

I like that perspective, thank you. 🙏🏼

I dig this. I feel the same with my expensive divers as well.
