Universal Geneve Poletouter

My collection. Vintage watches can be a daunting prospect.

Watches that have had a life, need to be treated differently to modern watches… but..they were built to do job, which they still do.

You may have to be more aware of them when you are wearing them but.. they are to be worn!

Like all old mechanical things, cars clocks and watches, they work better when used.

Also remember.. to be quote original, it’s the case, dial, hands etc which are important. The plexi, the movements are consumables.

Everything can be repaired.. within reason of course.

So wear vintage… Universal Geneve may have become pricey as with most vintage watches but there are literally hundreds of good quality Swiss made watches out there for a lot less than a moonswatch.

Look for movement makers

ETA, Venus, Valjoux are the obvious one… but again there are hundreds.

If you need any advice… there are many forums, owners clubs and watch folks here that will be happy to help.

Don’t fear vintage… I have watches that are 80 years old that run better and keep time more accurately than a modern Seiko movement watches..

Just sayin…

Thanks mate… I’ve been collecting since before these all became ridiculously pricey…

·

Lovely collection. The last 10 or so purchases of mine had been vintage so I’m completely onboard the vintage train. Still no Universal though coz, as you pointed out, they are a bit pricey. But I will get 1 one day. Not sure if I’ll ever get more than 1 but Universal is definitely on my short list.

Amazing collectibles, I was not mature enough, my financial resources were too fragile to properly investigate vintage watches back in the 80s, allowed so many terrific watches to slip by when I was on the constant pursuit of early Rolex watches. Then as now there were so many other brands to acquire. Rolex was/ is great but not the one and only!

UG have many watches other than the popular Polerouter…

All good quality…some still at reasonable prices.

Definitely worth a look… 🤝🏼

My friend… when I look back at ones I let go for so little.. I would weep, so… don’t look back! 🤣

Always moving forward, that’s life.

·

Wow! I was so tempted to get polerouter at a great price recently but I decided against it... Because of my two UG watches. Getting someone to service was tough, finding parts even tougher. Maybe someday...

·

Amazing collection Joe.

·

The prices on some better condition ones are getting ridiculous.

·

so, you are single-handedly driving the prices up of these...

Did you speak to Adam? @hamblar on IG…he is the font of all Polerouter knowledge. He made the ug Polerouter website. If you want he contact details…

Awesome collection, do you find if bit redundant to own different iteration of a same watch? Great choice tho, Imho one of the best watch design, period👌

·

Cool. Just starting to get into vintage Omega myself - fascinating and a rabbit hole within a rabbit hole. Enjoying the research and learning loads.

Good post 👍🏻👍🏻

Just been serviced.. new rotor weight fitted. Runs very well. 70’s styling…is a bit ‘marmite’

Got it in a trade for something I don’t remember what.. it was very cheap tho.

If you decide to take the plunge into vintage Omega… this is a good place to begin.

The service was done in Hatton Garden in London and seems to be legit Türler dial.

Don’t wear it often as my tastes now lie with earlier watches (40’s 50’s and particularly 60’s)

Do some research on prices and make me an offer 😬🖖🏼

Second this. You can still get Genta designed Shadow ( White, Gilt, Gold ) with micro rotor for reasonable amount. In any case vintage UN watches and especially Polerouter are beautifull underappreciated watches and slowly but surely getting the love they deserve

·

Great collection, also UN vintage fan here and fully agree with your advice in last paragraph. I also have 70 years old IWC that outperforms many Seiko movements

Funds tied up in sorting the Mariner at the moment, but I'll be interested when bank balance has recovered.

Very nice indeed 😊🖖🏻

Hmm does he by chance deal with tri-compax / chronographs as well?

He will know people that do if he doesn’t…

I love UN so scared of trying to buy one, one day I really want to get one especially the chrono like ones

No need to be scared. The bi-compax and tri-compax are actually pretty robust. Although it’s getting quite difficult to find them at reasonable prices.

There are many brands using similar movements, that are not so expensive.

The Polerouter can be tough finding examples that are original and complete. (Many watches using non original dials, hands etc…)

There is some great websites online though…

Good luck in your search…
