GMT on Vacation - But not why you think :)

I'm from the North East of the United States, and currently live in NYC (Brooklyn in the house!). We've always had a break, when schools are out for a week in February. For years, I've been fortunate enough to go to Florida during that time, and to bring my children as they grew up.

Like many of us, I like to bring a selection of watches when I travel (What can I say, I like to switch it up!). This year, I prioritized my three GMTs. Why? I definitely changed climates, but didn't cross any timezones.

You see, my youngest child (16), didn't join us on our vacation this year. They're on a school trip overseas. So while I am enjoying the sun, and picking up shells on the beach, she's off bouncing around Spain. And THAT explains the "need" for my GMTs. Not that these same watches might not have made the cut - they're all in heavy rotation. But I do enjoy being able to glance down and see what time it is over there - so I know if they're asleep, or out exploring 😀.

My three (from left to right in the photo):

  1. Lorca Model No. 1 - This really is the perfect travel companion. It's classic dimensions (37mm at the bezel) wear so well, and so comfortable. It looks good in any circumstance (casual or more dressy). The champaign-esque dial and beautiful bracelet go with most anything. And it even has 200m water resistance, so it can go in the pool (but I brought along some divers for that 😎)!

  2. Farer Lander IV - Love the colors! Love how it catches the light. It's possible I even packed a few shirts specifically to match the teal and orange 😀. This one also happened to be a gift from my wife, kids, and in-laws (who host this trip each year) for my 50th. So perfect - but this one stays out of the water (despite the 100m water resist).

  3. Seiko SSK005 - Love the orange! Love how it wears on that oh so slightly rattle-y jubilee ... kind of big and chunky, but highly wearable! I originally got this more affordable GMT after I pre-ordered the Lorca. You know, to kind of tide me over for any GMT needs while I waited ever so patiently for the Lorca to arrive. But this one has earned it's own place in my heart and my rotation. I also might have make sure to have some orange shirts to match this guy 😎.

I'm about to head back to reality (and colder climes), but thought I'd share how much I love actually getting to use a GMT complication for it's intended purpose - even when I never leave my home time zone. When mostly I just think they look cool 😍.

How many of you get to use your GMTs for actually tracking a second time? What's your the favorite (or only) GMT in your collection?

Thanks! It just works design-wise. The case, the brushing, the dial and hands! 😁

While I love the brighter colors on this one, that midnight is one handsome beast! Enjoy!

Nice! Loving the orange. And that compressor-style set up! Sounds like you got to attach some fun memories to that one!

I really like Farer's straps. They take a little to break in, but while I tend to lean towards bracelets, I've not had any desire to switch this one out 🙂

Yes I did! It's a modestly priced watch, too, so I was pleased with the quality as well as the looks.

That Lorca bracelet and 24hr hand are excellent looking! Does it feel as good on the wrist as it looks like it will?

It might be the most comfortable watch bracelet I wear. To be fair, I don't have any high-end luxury pieces. But this Lorca wears great!

My Lorca (black dial) is in the mail and I should be getting it by end of week…so freaking excited 😆I’m an East coaster living on the West coast and have always wanted a go-anywhere-do-anything GMT- that watch checks all the boxes imo
