On Top of The World

My Dad was a steel worker just out of high school for 13 years. Then he joined the Navy and became a photographer.

In 1967 he opened his first photography biz out of his home and it grew and thrived for many decades. I learned my craft from him (story for another time)

Anyway, because of his experience as a steel worker, he was able to bid on certain photography jobs that many couldn’t.

One of those jobs was photographing steel workers installing a new antennae on the Empire State Bldg around 1980-85 or so. You couldn’t pay me enough to do that, but he was like a kid in a candy store.

Anyway, he’s 85 now, semi-retired, still plugging away at smaller photography jobs. I paid him a visit tonight and asked him what watch it was that he was wearing in one of the photographs above. He just smiled, led me into his office and handed me his quartz Pulsar, still ticking away.

He wears an Watch these days primarily for convenience and health, but he keeps this Pulsar on his desk because it reminds him that he was once on top of the world. ~

Looking good for 85!

Our dads are awesome 👏

Mine was

Head lifeguard at a huge series of beaches

A gymnast

A tugboat captain

A commercial diver for the government environmental agency

A ski instructor in Kitsbuhel Austria

Before starting his own boat brokerage company and spending most of his life on the ocean

His lifetime watch was a ‘67 Rolex Explorer - he bought with his lifeguarding job income 😂

Love hearing awesome dad stories 👌🤝

That’s an awesome story. Just an aside—you’re a great writer. Your dad sounds like a great guy.

·

There is a lot of clip on YT on the theme ”When you realise that your parents where cooler than you”. I guess this qualifies. Fantastic photos👌I have severe problems on a ladder myself.

·

Brilliant story, love it.

·

I’m convinced our parents are just way cooler than we are and give them credit for.

Great share, thank you.

Great question. Didn’t ask, but I remember a different watch early on, so for this one I’d say 40 years give or take.
