Seiko 5s on E-Bay

I am seeing a lot of Seiko 5 watches on E-Bay for between $45-$60 (Used, Vintage.) This seems a little cheap to me.

Are these franken-watches? Or is that price range normal?

I hate to badmouth a subcontinent, but Mumbai Specials have that name for a reason. Pay attention to location of seller.

Extra $50.00 and get new at Jomashop

Also pay attention to whether it looks like "Seiko" was drawn on with a Sharpie.

Seiko logos on these are almost always painted on when it should be applied. Also the Japan Made at the bottom of the dial is another dead giveaway.

100% fakes - not even Frakenwatches.

Thanks 😎 I haven't bought anything yet, I have just been poking around. It looks like I might just stick to new, and avoid Ebay completely. It's just too chaotic. 😢 At least for watches, anyway.

There's a lot of good sellers on ebay. Don't shy away too quickly. Ebay is a wealth of market info at your finger tips for Free. If selling or buying something, do a completed item search in the advance search and you can see what that exact item has sold for over the past couple months.

I watch about 20-40 auctions a week that I have no intention of bidding on. It helps build my knowledge of watches or any other item.

The real truth of the matter is that I am a poor librarian, who spends all of his extra money on his wife and kids, leaving for me, and my hobbies, the scraps, so-to-speak. (I'm mostly speaking tongue-in-cheek, but there's a kernel of truth here. I am definitely "on a budget," when it comes to buying watches. 😎 )

So, I try to find bargains at Wal-Mart, and on Amazon. And I was looking at E-Bay for the same reason. I have seen guys on here say, "You gotta go in person, and try on the watch, first!" ... 🤣 Those kinds of places are way outta' my league, hahaha. 😂

I still might buy something on E-Bay, I dunno. I thought about building my own "franken-watch," just putting together parts lots that I see on E-Bay. It looks like a lot of fun, and my 16-year old son wants to help/participate. He's crafty, so I will definitely enlist his aid when the time comes. 😎

There's a lot of people here on WatchCrunch that would be happy to guide in making a watch. Most of us are on a pretty short financial leash. So you're not alone my friend! Just keep it fun!

I love the idea of building a watch with your son.

What you are getting is an old seiko movement that has a hand painted dial(not seiko) is in an aftermarket case (not seiko) new glass (not seiko) . So the movement is the only thing seiko and its a bit of lottery how well it will work, they've generally had a hard life in a damp tropical environment and will not be waterproof in any way. It's a proper gamble and like gambling only play if you can afford to lose.

Wow, that is a bad knockoff. The font is so bad. So many things wrong with that.

Please explain; being a neophyte myself, the explanation would be quite informative for me. 🙂

Besides the wrong/bad font on the dial. @Stricko named everything else wrong with this watch. Non-seiko dial, case, glass. And since seiko movements are probably the most common movements out there, it's the only thing in this picture that is seiko. Question is, does this watch have hacking? If yes, then it's not even the correct movement for this watch.

Building a watch is nice because you could make it your own. If interested, look at Aliexpress along with ebay. Both have parts for cheap. And ask any questions here. People here are always willing to help.

@Polishmadman I will certainly do just that! 😀 Thanks! 😀
