Q: How did you get into watch collecting?

I’ve been fascinated by two things for as long as I can remember. One was the sea and seafaring, the other is the mechanical artistry of timekeeping devices. As a young child, I remember being mesmerised by deck watches and the marine chronometers shown in movies. The complexity of even a simple three hand watch was astonishing. And still is.

Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?

The very first watch I ever owned, was a tiny quartz watch my grandparents gave to me. I believe I was six or seven at the time. It was an analogue dress watch, with slim gold hands and a white dial. The dial lit up green when one depressed the crown. I still have the watch 15 years later. Though it is far too small for me now.

Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?

My Oris TT3 was purchased from a friend. He’s a world class tattoo artist and not really a watch guy. The Oris had been dropped ages ago and stopped running, then sat collecting dust for a few years. I purchased it and completely dismantled the movement, replacing the oscillating pinion and giving it a service. About a year later I became really interested in tattooing and that watch reminds me of the convergence point between those two interests.

Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?

I would say, prioritise quality and longevity. I don’t mean you have to go out and buy a luxury watch. Simply buy a watch that has good quality for whatever price you’re paying. A decent movement and acceptably machined case go a long way. When I buy a watch, I try to buy something that can be serviced. Personally I stay away from non serviceable, or disposable watches. Otherwise, just buy what you like.
