To the moon and back again - a Snoopy story

You know how sometimes in life you discover something, and then you start to drool uncontrollably, and then you catch yourself and immediately look around you to make sure no one saw you behave like a sugar-starved kid that accidentally just walked into a mega candy store clutching the $20 you got from grandma for your birthday...that's sort of how I felt the first time I saw the Omega Speedmaster Silver Snoopy back in 2020 😂

"I must have it!" I said to myself. Aaaand then the reality of it all brought everything crashing down. It was basically an instant hype piece. The market was starving for watches. Flippers were making bank off of watch-hungry enthusiasts that had $$$ to burn (at its peak I believe it hit $35K USD on the secondary market) because Covid meant no one was going on any sort of vacation anytime soon, so their holiday budget became their watch budget, magically. So my "I must have it" quickly turned into "oh wow, that's an incredible watch, who knows maybe one day I'll get to see one in the real, and maybe, MAYBE if I'm super lucky, find a used one that isn't the cost of a new VW Golf.

Like many of you, owning an Omega Speedmaster has been a dream goal of mine - I was the kid that was absolutely obsessed with aviation, NASA, and everything that had anything to do with space flight, speed and science 🚀🔭

Fast-forward around 3 years from the unveiling of my grail Speedmaster and I’m at this point thoroughly entrenched in the watch world. I'm making watch content, publishing videos, attending watch meets, and engaging with a small but very dedicated and close-knit local watch community comprised of some amazing folks, having met most of them either here on WC or through Ben Bridge Timeworks Seattle. Oh, and of course we must count @Max & @AndrewMorgan amongst those awesome people I got to meet and hang out with 😊

Long story made even longer, it’s very easy to get jaded and to feel like you’ll never get “the call” for your personal grail watch because you’re not made of money and because you can’t spend zillions of $$$ to hopefully one day be allowed to buy a grail watch - I know! And that’s not even the only variable that factors in the process that is actually getting a timepiece. But the core takeaway that I’m trying to impart here is this - there will always be someone that’s bigger/faster/stronger/smarter/richer than you…don’t let that stand in the way of your dream, no matter what that dream is. Be kind, be genuine, aim high and give it your all because you’ve got nothing to lose, just opportunities to make new watch nerd friends and awesome memories 🤗

NOW, with that whole preamble out of the way...

The grand unveiling of my latest addition - and what an addition it is indeed! I’m completely over the moon and beyond happy to be able to say that I’m the proud owner of a brand new Omega Speedmaster 50th Anniversary Apollo 13 Silver Snoopy Award 🎉🤗 a colossal thank you to @ConorFromTimeworks85 and Judy and really the whole entire team at Timeworks Ben Bridge for making my year! They took my pipe-dream fantasy of "one day" and turned it into an unforgettable day of "hey guess what, this is THE CALL, this is actually happening, congratulations!"

This wasn't just a simple transactional engagement - the whole boutique welcomed us, my wife captured some of the reactions, and everyone at Timeworks were just as thrilled and as excited for the watch as I was! Mind you, I did tell Conor that I had a special shirt set aside that I would wear if I ever got the watch - AND I DID! I actually had to call my dad and tell him we'd be a little late (it was his birthday earlier that week and we had made plans to spend the day with him) so I brought a second shirt to change into after the unexpected morning epic-ness.

Anyways, I hope I didn't bore you. I hope my story encourages you to keep pursuing that thing you think may be out of reach - whether tangible like a watch, or more intangible like that new job you're dreaming of landing (or getting that degree, or going on that vacation, etc. you get the idea) I hope you keep pushing for it and that you have fun along the way, making new friends and enjoying new experiences on the journey! Because spoilers, some of the people you meet along the journey will be pretty special, and they'll be kind and share similar interests. And they'll care enough to try and help however possible. And on rare occasions, sometimes, if possible, they'll help you reach your goals. The only thing you have to do is to embark on the journey and be a kind and active participant ❤

To the moon...yeah, if I could have found one. Also, during that time, everyone was still in lockdown so trying to find an open Omega store was going to be a challenge.

·

WTF man!

I thought for sure it was a loaner for a vid or a rich buddy letting you try it!

🤩🤯😳

I thought you were a regular people (like me 🤨) but now I expect appearances of you and Kevin O’Leary together on Teddy picking out fave 100k watches 😎🤘

ok will stop - dam 🦫 congrats

(‘Congrats’ seems not nearly strong enough sentiment for this one!!)

Haha, yeah that makes sense! I did wander into the local official Omega Boutique here one fine weekend back in 2021 (without an appointment) and the person did indeed allow me in, after making a big deal on how they don't accept walk-ins but they'd spare a few min for me. I asked about the Snoopy to which she literally laughed out loud 😂 so that was an experience...lol

Apologies for my drama. I’m honestly super happy for you.

these unicorn watches exist, so knowing that one went to a nice person is a great thing.

I live in an odd city with extreme wealth that’s always possessed by people who don’t work.

So it doesn’t jibe with my reality that a non oligarch, non kleptocrat non nepobabies … BUT a normal dude, who works… a job (!!) can buy a grail watch that triples in value the moment you step out of the store. I expect it’ll be worth more than rare Daytonas soon.

Super cool that you got one. Caseback pics? How is the band? Wears big? Super scratch scared, or, ‘this is no safe Queen’.

So . many . questions .

No apologies necessary, I knew you were being over the top and silly in a good spirited way 🤝

And thank you for saying all the nice things - I think I'm an ok person, but yes, that's all the more reason on how I'm still shocked and live in my own person disbelief bubble of "how did this even happen?!"

I live in Seattle which is very much a tech city (Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, Google, etc.) plus we have Boeing which = aviation so there's quite a lot of wealth floating/driving/flying about 😜

Value of watches, yeah that's an interesting topic - since I've started my watch journey I've learned a ton about watches and the types of people that enjoy/collect them. I'm the guy that doesn't care about the market value of something once purchased (but having it maintain/grow/exceed its original value is appreciated) but I've seen people that will aggressively seek out watches and buy them because of their potential to 2x/3x/etc. their value in time (and they may not even LIKE the watch) to each their own.

Thanks again for the enthusiasm and support! Caseback pics will come soon, probably this weekend, I'll spend some time shooting more photos. You can also see much more of the watch on my instagram: @The_Timist_IG

The band is very nice, the leather/nylon combo works great, it was a little stiff the first 3 days I wore it and it was a bit uncomfortable on the lateral portions of my wrist (I do wear my watches on the tighter side, I don't like them flopping about) but it's been getting better and better with each wear. It does not wear big (but take that with a pinch of salt, I also have a 46mm Navitimer and a 43mm Sea Dweller) I think it's perfectly proportioned. If anything at 42mm it feels smaller on the wrist! I am worried about scratching it, but then again that's because I just like to take care of all my things (because you know, they cost money lol!) but it is not a safe queen, it will be and has been worn almost every day since I got it. I'll be purchasing a Omega Nato strap soon, and will likely end up buying the bracelet by the end of the year so that I can have options for it!

Feel free to ask more questions either here on IG (replying back on WC on my phone seems to no longer work for me, so responses may be delayed until I get back to my PC, Instagram is a lot faster) 👍

One can dream right?!

I'd like to get the tri-fecta of Speedy, Seamaster, and an AT one day, but it would be ironic if I was ready to drop $20k or more walking in and only to be turned away.😜

That would be awesome (owning the tri-fecta) but yes, there are many types of gatekeeping, I'd just hope that if that uncool scenario did unfold for you, you'd go somewhere else and get your dream collection...then maybe drop by the original place and ask about seeing possible Nato straps for all 3 watches (while having all 3 of them on you) and then casually letting them know that you had such a great experience at the place where they DID treat you like a human that is passionate about watches and is willing to spend $$$ (I.e. with respect) 😂

·

Same to you my man...I'd just take my money elsewhere...and if I had to, just buy it online. At the end of the day, I'd still have the watch on my wrist, without the hassle/headache of wondering if I'll be accepted into the club.

Bingo! And to be clear the Omega Boutique since that weird visit in 2021 has improved their service and treatment of me since then - but the Snoopy was not purchased from them, but from the amazing people that make up Timeworks Ben Bridge. And they treated me like a close friend/family and not in that superficial sales type of way, but genuine kindness, interest, and respect 👌

That’s awesome 👏🔥.

Similarly impressed that my buddy @TheHoroSexual can’t take off his gold Daytona. You guys are now both heavy hitters in my book 🤘💪

Grails SHOULD NOT be safe queens IMO.

Already follow ya’ll on IG - I’m the mysteriously named ‘Fieldwalker.watch😂.

I went with something not subtle 😜

Haha, that's awesome! I'll follow you back shortly! 👍

Grails (to me at least) are a lot like super cars and hyper cars - people that are true enthusiasts and love and appreciate these things will LOSE THEIR MINDS when they see one, so in a way it's supporting the community because (let's be honest) how often does one see a Bugatti Chiron or a gold Daytona/Snoopy/5712/Skeleton Royal Oak/etc. etc.?! 😜

Sorry missed this the first time around as I was traveling...

Congrats on adding such a special watch to your collection!

Thanks for sharing - I can feel the excitement and thrill in your post.

I recently picked up my Snoopy as well...very cool watch and certainly a great conversation starter...

Oh no worries at all! Thanks for taking the time 🙂 congrats on yours as well, it's just such a special and fun timepiece, I can't help but smile every time I look down! I'm curious to see if you'll fall in love with yours (or give it to your wife 😀)

·

Congratulations and no jealousy here (well not much) because it's great to see this watch going to someone who will wear and appreciate it.

Wow, your story makes me feel guilty about trying to stop my wife from asking about the Snoopy every time we walk into an AD that sells Omega. Time to start encouraging her.

Congrats again!

Very much appreciated! As I keep saying, I keep surprising myself whenever I see it on my wrist, and I STILL can't believe it myself 🤯

Nah, never stop, there's no guarantee, but as long as you're good people and you're not harassing the staff, talking shop and geeking out over timepieces is what we all enjoy doing. They'll appreciate it as well 🤝

Hello James. Your (long) story makes my day, maybe even my week. And I'm glad it is a long story, not just because of its great outcome for you (though that is pretty fantastic) but because of the writing quality. I like them all obviously, but my favorite paragraph is number 5. People these days, more than anything else, lack Encouragement. It's true what your encouraging words said, and to paraphrase Bob Dylan, "There's always someone better than you, and there's always someone better than him."

You know something is well written when you enjoy it even though you really don't have a dog in the fight. But maybe I do. I generally don't care about watches with cartoon characters on the dial, especially expensive watches. And I don't have a grail watch, except for maybe a Solar Mecha-quartz tough field watch that would sell for less than $200. Sort of a toned-down Seiko Arnie, the watch Schwarzenegger liked so much he named himself after it. But it turns out I have an actual (cartoon) dog in the fight, which is Snoopy. I always liked Peanuts, and think that your watch and the Seiko Snoopys are really well done. I might even buy a Snoopy watch if somebody would make a Red Baron Edition with Snoopy on the flying doghouse. What would really be awesome would be to have Snoopy and the doghouse on sort of a rotating chapter ring, or the large tip of a second hand, so the doghouse would complete one mission (sortie?) around the dial every minute (or hour.) They could make it so Snoopy would be completely upside down at 12 o'clock, just like his doghouse used to go upside down sometimes when he was fighting the Red Baron.

Was Covid really dreamed up by watch manufacturers so we would all buy more watches? I knew there was something sinister behind it.

That is a great story, and I'm so glad you're enjoying your new watch. But keep your eyes on the road! I wrote a story on WatchCrunch about a week ago addressing that very subject. It's called "My Conversation with Mademoiselle Tissot" and I think you might like to read it.

Again, Congratulations.

Wow, that's so very kind and generous of you to say - thank you for the support and the genuine attitude you've shared with me (and with WC as a result) I truly appreciate it 😊

It's easy to put words to digital paper when you're passionate about something - the words just come from the heart, and when you have faith in the audience and trust that they'll accept you because "they're watch people, just like me" it's all the more reason to open up and share the joy! More often than not I feel like people contain themselves more than they should, likely born from a fear that their tastes, their decisions, and ultimately their joy will be (pun not intended) dogged on and put down. But I've just felt that I'm more likely to find "my type of people" if I just life my truth...turns out, not everyone joins me along the journey, but those that do are really quite amazing and phenomenal people 👍 and it doesn't matter if something is $5 or $500 or $50,000 joy is joy and we should be able to share it with "our people" without the fear of judgement 🤝

Your Snoopy Red Baron Edition sounds amazing! I'd LOVE to see Snoopy zipping about on the dial one a min or once an hour (in a GMT watch!) that would be incredible! Seriously, would love to see something like that in a timepiece!

Enough about me, I'm going to make my way to your page and look up the "Conversation with Mademoiselle Tissot" post! But thank you again for the warm and kind wishes!

Man is wired to be drawn to shiny objects but watch collectors require beauty as well. We're very appreciative of what can be drawn on a 40mm canvas.
