My Wife's First Proper Watch!

If you're on this platform, then you're a watch nerd like me. And if you're a watch nerd like me, and have a spouse/partner/significant other, then you've probably subjected them to many hours of watch talk - either in the form of talking about watches non-stop, or YouTube videos, or watch meets, or because of your inability to restrain yourself from walking past a watch boutique or AD and NOT at the very least gawk at the window display if not straight up walk in to stare at watches and maybe even try some on...while they support us and love us for who and what we are 😊

There's also a strong likelihood that at some point you've suggested that they get a watch of their own to "join in on the fun that is the watch world." Sometimes, in rare instances, our significant others reciprocate the passion and interest and join in! Other times, they outright may say "this is not for me" which is totally fine. And sometimes, whether it's because we've worn them down, or because we've actually sparked interest in them (because of our incessant asking) they'll finally say something around the lines of "ok, so if I WERE to theoretically spend money on a watch, and not on (insert their preferred vice here) I supposed it would be (insert watch of choice here) for me."

This last scenario is the one my wife and I found ourselves in. And one random day we were watching some random YouTube video, and the Oyster Perpetual 36 in turquoise pops up. And my wife goes "oh, well that's pretty."

MY EYEBROWS SHOOT STRAIGHT UP AND MY EXCITEMENT BUILDS...but I have to play it cool...keep calm...

"Oh yeah? You like the OP 36? That's cool, yeah, it's a fun watch, very wearable and that dial color is super versatile"

...I'm sure I overdid it. No one says that to their significant others, I'm coming on too strong...

"Yes, it's very nice, do they come in other colors?"

"They do indeed, there's a light pink, a green, a red, even a yellow one, although some of these may be discontinued, but yeah, it's great, lots of people love them."

"Nice, that's probably the one I'd get."

"The turquoise one?"

"Yeah, it's fun and looks like a great watch all around."

"Hey, did you know it has a nickname? They call it Tiffany Blue because it looks like the blue from Tiffany & Co."....I over did it again...

"Oh yeah I can see that, it's nice!"

And that's all it took - I made a mental note and said "if ever this watch became available, I would try and surprise her with it. It would be HER watch, plus it's a Rolex so it'll last forever, and that color is absolutely gorgeous."

Fast forward more time than I care to account for, I'm sitting in my car on a Saturday in March waiting for my online order to be completed so I can go home and enjoy our favorite Indian takeout food...and my AD, whom I've told ONCE that "if the OP 36 Tiffany became available, it would be an instant purchase for my wife" shoots me a text:

"Hey, you should get this for your wife haha!"

I IMMEDIATELY text him back - "are you serious right now?"

No answer.

I text him again - "dude, please tell me you're serious, you KNOW that's the one and only watch my wife wants."

No answer.

I call him - no answer.

I leave him a voice message - "I'm serious, you can't do this to me, you can't just text me and then I'm over here losing my mind thinking you're just messing with me, please tell me it's real, call me back!"

He calls back 3 minutes later - "Hey! Yeah, sorry I was with a client. I was just joking about the watch, sorry!"

"Wait, so you DON'T have the OP 36?"

"No I DO have it, but I was just teasing that you should get it for your wife, thought it would be fun haha"

"Dude, you don't understand, that's THE watch for her, I told you a while ago! Please tell me I can buy it!"

"You want to come see it?"

"YES! I'm waiting for our food, please put it aside I'll be right there!!!"

I text my wife and I tell her I need to run some other errands and that I'd be home a little later...because I'm now on a mission to source the funds to buy her/mine/our ideal watch for her...without her knowing! I can see it now, the perfect birthday gift, secured MONTHS in advance, it's going to be epic!

I get the food, I drive to my AD at a totally normal rate of speed, and I see the watch! The funds had been moved appropriately in the interim, and the plan to keep the watch inside the AD's safe until her birthday 4 months later was set in place.

I lasted 2 weeks. I COULDN'T KEEP IT A SECRET ANY LONGER and I figured she deserved to enjoy the watch as soon as possible! And so lucky for me she wanted to go to the mall, and after some frantic yet totally coordinated and super sleek texts between my AD and I, we had arrange for the surprise to happen in store. And it did. And it was epic! And so now you know the journey.

We went from a totally chill Saturday, just waiting for your takeout food to be finished, to a text that started out as a joke, to HYPER joy and disbelief - to - my wife now has her very own watch, one that is truly hers (the Cartier Tank is a shared watch, it doesn't count) and one that she's been wearing every single day since we picked it up 😍

The surprise was perfect, my AD is amazing, she's over the moon with the watch, and I'm full of joy to see her loving this whole experience and joining our little watch community with what is arguably one epic watch ❤
