Flea market find (NOS, 25€)

Yesterday I found the vintage Avia in the picture in a flea market with the original strap and in NOS condition. They were selling it for 35€ and I got it for 25€. It has a beautiful sunburst dial.

Things I know about the watch:

  • 30mm case (being cushion shaped it wears larger on the wrist)
  • 16mm lug width (I currently have it on a 18mm strap as the original strap was too short for me)
  • Swiss made 17 jewels manual winding (incabloc) movement

Things I'm not sure about the watch:

  • Silver plated brass case? On the case back it says "stainless steel back", and that makes me think that the main case is made out of silver plated brass
  • Pin lever movement? If anyone knows how to identify it without opening the case (maybe by the sound) I would really appreciate it! I say this as I've found online a vintage Avia that was similar to this one, and it had a pin lever movement inside
  • Hour and minute thermally blued hands? When the light hits them, they turn from black to bright blue, which makes me think that way

Overall, I am really happy with my new watch!

Btw, @chronotriggered you were right about 30/32mm watches! Some of them (like this one) really look amazing on the wrist 👌🏻

The "17 Jewels" and Incabloc tell you that it is not pin pallet.  Avia is an old company that made good movements, some that found their way into American watches like Wittnauer and Ball. The case is likely plated with chrome. I would guess 1960's.  The condition looks to be excellent. Great find.

I'm not allowed to flea market. Lol

Too many treasures I must have. I can eBay because I'm generally good at buying only one watch every month. A flea market though? Soooo many treasures; some that need fixing that I don't have enough time or expertise for. So no flea markets for me.

Pop the back?

I really appreciate all the info, thank you Sir!

Since you really know about vintage watches, I'm sure you have found some little treasures at flea markets, am I right? 😉

Pop the back?

I don't want to damage it as I don't have the proper tools, but @Aurelian has just confirmed that is not a pin lever movement

And again, you were right about the size! There are some cool watches under 34mm 👌🏻

I totally understand you, I have just been lucky finding a NOS condition watch in a flea market, normally the watches offered in these type of markets need some big repairs

Ok - it’s probably likely to be an AS movement.

Thank you!

What does "AS" stand for? I know about bumper movements, pin lever, ... but I have no clue about AS movements 😅

That's a great find, tocayo! I haven't been to a flea market in a good while. I think it's time I go hunting :D

A. Schild - they are one of the many prolific movement or ebauche manufacturers you will come across, like ETA, Peseux, FHF, etc…
