14 month update
Apologies for not being on the forum for a while but semi retired means you have no spare time, sounds counter intuitive but is true.
Just a quick update on the Longines Zulu time.
Any regrets of buying this watch? Nil, Zilch, absolutely not.
In fact I have grown fonder of this watch as time as gone on. I currently have 16 watches in my collection and I am looking for a diver, so one of the 16 will have to go. The Longines is 17th on the list. The only change I've done is the strap, having a warm period of weather here in the UK, so switched the strap to the Zulu diver octopod. The leather strap it came with I still love but the octopod is more breathable and stretches.
Did notice a price increase on the watches but what hasn't gone up here in the UK, except for disposable income.

I would be lying if I I said I knew exactly how a spring drive works. Not sure if the quartz is thermo compensated like their high accuracy quartz. To me it seems like a great idea to use something tried and tested for its accuracy. The other ideas like tourbillon are great but then bring up the costs with negligible results.

I think it might be the audience. Most non watch enthusiast or should we say normal people, if they have some disposable income and want to mark an event or celebration and go the watch route will only have one brand in their head, Rolex. Now I know the chances of them getting one are slim nowadays but I dare say they show other Swiss brands. The majority of watch crunch people I would say own more than just one watch, I would also say that most of us do research on materials used, movements and the biggest in my case, Value for Money. This I believe is where Grand seiko and Seiko come in. I purchased 2 Grand seikos and a Longines in the last 3 months all vfm to me
I know what you're going through but luckily for me I've never been drawn to Rolex. A lot of watch enthusiast say the pleasure is in the hunt for the grail watch. I've now learned to use the time to do the research. If you're set on a Rolex then I'm afraid I can't offer any advice as to me it looks like the AD holds all the cards at present, but situations change and it might be worth holding out.
Had to admire how you tried your best to search for positives but was obviously struggling. Like you say everyone is different, I myself am not a Tissot fan, although I do like the prx and believe it is supposedly a copy of a watch they produced in 1978. Although I couldn't afford a Tissot in 1978.
