(How) do you prepare for a big pickup?

So, tomorrow I get to travel over to Leeds to pickup my second big acquisition... IWC Pilot 41 Chronograph.

Its come direct from the factory to the dealer I bought my Breitling from last year. He’s a really good guy so we’ll have some time to enjoy the handover, have a drink, try on some other pieces etc… you know, make an event out of it.

Im guessing a lot of us are guys who like to have a bit of a plan… I mean half our lives is doing research and thinking ahead right…?

So here’s my question… after youve done all the research, you’ve pulled the trigger and now you’re about to go collect, what do you do to ensure the pickup / in person experience is as memorable as you want it to be?

Savour the day. Do little things before and after the pick up to build your excitement, and then to enjoy the wearing experience afterwards. just try to grin ear to ear the whole day 😏

PS - awesome watch - very jealous!

Congrats! The pilot chrono 41 is a beautiful piece.

while you are picking up your watch, be sure to try out the different easX-change straps available at AD.

here’s my 3717 pilot chrono and tribute to 3705 in ceratanium.

Thanks big man. I love that idea of just dropping little breadcrumbs to build up to it and then enjoy it afterwards 🍻 Yeah, I’m really chuffed and super aware of how lucky I am to get a piece like this. Will do a full review / tell the story in a week or so 👍🏻

Thanks man… will do. 👍🏻 They’re both phenomenal pieces in diff ways aren’t they. The colour matched day date on 3717 is really lovely and the technical value of the material with the ceratanium is something that’s really REALLY special. A Mohave would be a grail piece for me… #oneday 🥂

How do you like to do it?
Do you like to wash up first? You know, top and tails...

Actually nothing all that special. Perhaps go out for drinks and dinner afterwards.

Just don’t let anyone or anything kill your vibe. Enjoy it as if it was your birthday.

Edit: And don’t forget to post the watch here!

Curious which dealer your using in Leeds? I only because I'm in Leeds and it's always nice to know when dealers are getting positive feedback and they're on your doorstep.

Chinda at Owen Robinson (soon to become Berry’s) on Commercial St. Legend of a guy 👍🏻 Plays it straight and a real enthusiast.

I'm going to be collecting my Speedy in a couple of weeks (actually on my birthday) and I had nothing at all planned.

In my head it's buying A Thing, albeit an outrageously expensive Thing.  I don't normally celebrate buying Things.

I feel like I should be making more of an event of it, now you've highlighted it.

·

Celebrate by buying a long sleeve button down that matches the watch in question. Wear it on the big day so you can be ok walking out of the store with it on your wrist while its protected by your new shirt.

Then drink 2 beers and bang the wife.

Well there’s never any ‘should’ in any of this… 😊 However we each approach it is right for us. I guess Im just wanting to make the most of something I don’t do all that often 😃

There’s also a practical element of “stuff to not forget on the day“… like inspect the living daylights out of every aspect of it before I make the final payment to ensure I’m happy 😂😂

Nice! 🎉 And yes, playing the mental game of ensuring nothing spoils the day will be extra important 👍🏻👍🏻

well if you next purchase is going to be a Rolex, then I have two for sale and one of them is New Yachtmaster 44 steel and gold. I never worn it and the other is a Gold 36mm Day date. New Rolex, the AD's will not sell you one ......lol

When I bought my Speedy (watch that started me collecting), my wife came with me because she pushed me to buy it after my boring her to tears talking about it but we didn't spend any extra time at the AD (just enough to hear all the normal congratulatory admiring comments from the sales staff while the bracelet was being sized).

Instead, we left the AD and went to a nice restaurant by the beach to see the sunset where I stared lovingly at . . . my new watch the entire dinner almost completely ignoring my wife (except for some more watch talk).

Congratulations!!! I love that IWC.

Nice!! Great story 🥂 It’s lovely when objects, people and memories all combine 😃 Thanks for sharing

After you get your watch, make love to your wife with all of the enthusiasm that you would if you had been separated for years.  She won't be able to wait till you buy another watch.

·

The day ends well when you finally set that new piece into the open slot of your watch box and step back to take it in. Welcome to the family!

You then tell yourself the collection is complete knowing that within a week or two, you will be back to researching your next one.

Yeah it was great, thanks bud 👍🏻 Gonna do a full write up in the review I’ll post of the watch soon, but was there for about an hour and a little highlight was being led into the new Vacheron boutique they’ve just opened next door and seeing some grail pieces in the metal 🤣🤣 The whole thing was a real experience.
