Becoming One

Has Tudor created the ultimate Sub homage? As Danny Milton from Hodinkee put it, “what happens when we reach the singularity here?”.

I loved Tudor from 2017. I don't like Tudor as much in 2024. What happened during those 7 years?

Interested to hear what you don’t like

·

Wow i love that Tudor Submariner i dont see any thing wrong with it

·

I was very surprised when big brother allowed Tudor to make a Sub without faux patina.

what is it that changed your mind? I went the other way myself...JMO

·

I agree. Specs and quality are in alignment AND you can actually buy it (for way less). What isn’t to like?

·

I love it!

·

It's honestly silly that it's taken them this long to present a Sub equivalent. Literally every other brand has one, and Tudor was founded on making affordable, nearly 1:1 versions of Rolex offerings.

Submariners are difficult to buy and probably looking to go upmarket in terms of price, Rolex wins by having Tudor release a less expensive version (that is still VERY expensive.) They get both the mid-tier and upper-tier buyers. It's a win-win for them (but not for my bank account)

·

I think it’s badge engineering like GM

In the 90/00

·

We are back to the days when Rolex was the rich man's Tudor

·

Tudor have had there own submariner since the early 60s so there only going off there own back catalog

What if…

All new important releases for Rolex in 2024 are precious metals. I might be wrong, but it seems Rolex is moving up the market caring less every year about their steel models leaving this space for Tudor.

20-30 years ago Rolex main rival was Omega. With METAS references Tudor will be more and more competing with Omega while Rolex aims for holy trinity.

Pure guess work from a watch noob :)

Also to add to what I mentioned previously, for me and my end uses, a Tudor, in particular the Pelagos line are what I want in a high end watch.

I'd throw this monochrome BB into the mix as well.

Granted I'd "butcher" the movement and have a competent watch maker left hand drive it, and possibly get it cerakoted....

But for awhile now I've been meaning towards Tudor, should I ever want to pay "luxury" price tags.

If Tudor had released a 39mm, I would've driven hundreds of miles today to put my name down too. 👀🤏🏻🤘🏻🤌🏻

Don’t shoot the messenger, but new BB41 is actually 40.2mm (I own a Burgundy METAS). Side by side it’s nearly identical in size to Pelagos 39 (case is 39, bezel is 40mm).

Full fat BlackBay is not a small watch but is not big either.

·

My wife is so called normie, I’ve shown her your post, she have looked at those pictures and said “ Yaa, same watch on different bracelet, so what?” 🤣

Still want that fixed lug tho....👀🤏🏻😂.

However thank you for the info! 🍻

Figured it prolly was something like that, since rarely, if ever, are measurements exact from what I've seen.

Yes, 39-40mm Pelagos FXD would be amazing. I’ve tried on both regular and chronograph versions of RedBulll FXDs. Easily manageable on my 7” wrist, but I’d rather wait and see what happens next year.

·

Is the new Black Bay 41 the ultimate Sub homage? I don't see it, totally different vibes in designs. I am more a fan of the Black Bay 58 and Black Bay 54 for the retro design ethos brought into the modern era they offer.

I agree, Rolex is moving away from the luxury positioning we watch consumers/enthusiasts can access and upward into a very different and elite customer base positioning. Rolex offered nothing accessible at W&W - it was all elite level product launches. It is what it is.

My theory has one weakness though - if Rolex wants to go up market, what’s the point of building a new watch factory by 2030? Unless they plan to be the only producer above $25k 😜

·

If they made one in 39mm (and under 12mm thick), I'd probably sell my BB58 and buy it immediately.

·

I showed a picture of the new monochrome BB to my wife and she said: "You already have this one!!" 😂

·

Better specs.

·

I wish they would have done this with the black bay 39 smooth bezel.

·

They're pandering to the market at large, not watch folk.

The terrifying truth is that they can and will sell 1.5m watches a year despite pushing up the price curve. You only have to look at the grey market to see that consumers are willing to pay much higher prices for Rolexes than the current authorised retail market charges. By pushing further up that price curve they (Rolex and their ADs) can capture some of the profits currently going to great market dealers.

·

Went to the AD to try it on and there is no need to buy a no date Sub anymore. This BB will get you as close as you can get for half the money
