What the Vacheron sales rep said

I was looking around the VC store admiring their patrimony tourbillion and other watches they had on display. He approached me and asked if I needed any assistance. I asked if he had a stainless steel blue dial overseas for me to look at because i have never seen the watch in person. His reply: "It is a very popular model. It has a long wait list. If you would purchase a different watch from us perhaps you would be rewarded with [the opportunity to buy] one."

How rude of him to assume i could actually afford one without going deep into debt. 😅

The fake scarcity tactic is getting tired. Luxury brands are making it easy for microbrands and other brands to get money

·

If he actually said that I'd never never go back to that AD again! REWARDED?!? 😡

·

Nothing to be upset about, these are just positional goods meant to confer status to the owner. There is no part of their business model where actually selling a good watch at a fair price matters.

So long as the hype exists they'll probably stay on top. VC does have great history and good looking watches with great finishing. The AD games suck though.

·

Was this a vacheron AD or an authorised dealer like Watches of Switzerland? Thx

Yep rewarded. He actually used rewarded. Haha. I was pretty shocked too. I expected that from a rolex AD, but not VC. But then again, to be honest, it was the first time i asked a VC store about an Overseas

I was more shocked and held in disbelief than upset haha. It is a funny game they play

Ryan’s next post will be a “NWA: I just bought a VC Patrimony”

·

The arrogance of these folks is mind-blowing!! 🤯

·

Surprised anyone still visits authorised dealers to hear about fake scarcity and waiting lists… hasn’t every watch enthusiast already figured this out?! 😂😂

·

Oh, how incredibly Rolex of you.

About face. Out the door. Never to return. Trash them on social media.

·

The AD is a w⚓️. Over the years my experience is ADs are 50/50. Also, there seems to be a lot of love for Cartier here but my experience has been many of their sales people have had poor knowledge of their watches.

·

How dare he ... fuff .

Vacheron AD. Had vacheron sign outside. Only sells vacheron. Inside Dubai Mall

Haha. They do look good but too expensive for my poor ash

I wouldn’t “reward” that dealer with a dime of my money.

The arrogance is astounding.

Agreed

Yeh the blue dial overseas is my grail. It's why i hope to see one in person to see if it would have the same effect on me as it does on pics and videos.

Their games are not very pleasant to be honest

I love that watch. I had the chance to handle one at a Watchfinder meet-up last year in NYC. It's indeed a stunning watch. Once it's on your wrist, it feels like it belongs there (beware, lol).

I may have to sell some organs then? 😆

Sure. Let me know how it goes so I can put one of my kidneys on the market for my grail fund.😂🤣😆🙌

·

I would probably not have enough self control and just blurt out “Eff off” as I walked away. No point in dealing with that level of arrogance

My recommendation is to go to the closest boutique where you live and let them know who you are before asking to try anything specific on. “ hi. I was interested in your brand and wanted to come in, take a gander and introduce myself. Nice to meet you, your name is? Great, I live in specific area of the city and have a been growing a collection of other names of brand watches. Thanks for having me. Do I need to have an appointment to view and purchase some timepieces? Full stop…. Then they are going to look at you up and down, probably at your wrist, hands/nails and shoes say something like thanks for stopping in, (Yes/no)(Yes)you need an appointment and they take your information and add your to their crm to follow up at a later date or never call you back (No) would you like something to drink, we’d love to set up an account for you. Please come this way, is there a specific piece you’d like to see? Then you name two to three watches and hopefully you at least get to look at one.

This is the only two scenarios

Hey, why even bother making this effort on your part? You clearly haven’t registered what kind of attitude these dealers have. Save your money for sth worthwhile, like taking your family on vacation. 😇🤨

I’m not sure I understand your comments and or question…Are you asking me why I would go thru the effort of educating people on what it takes to tango?Or play their game. It’s not about the attitude these dealers have, it’s reactions like this that turn them away from selling people watches with stars in their eyes. It’s a textbook that they’ve been trained to follow. If you’d like me to elabore I’d be happy to, but I don’t appreciate a derogatory comment in stating that I have never registered for a timepiece. If you took a minute to look at my profile you’ll appreciate what a real collector and admirer to looks like. Cheers @Horologycritic

My experience when visiting my AD is vastly different. They have always been cordial, helpful and answered my questions. And in their defense, what retailer would not give preferential treatment to their best customers? If I were in retail, I certainly would. But to your experience, suggesting that you buy something you don’t want to gain favor/preferential treatment is really reprehensible and very short sighted. I just wish these dealers would come up with a more standardized and transparent way of selling their high demand watches.

Woulda gave them a.. and walked out

This only happened once to me. I asked if the person seriously suggested I buy something that I don't want so I can buy something where I haven't decided yet whether I want it or not. I can see the logic behind having to wait in order to purchase. But I won't buy unless I can see the thing before I pay.

That said, this isn't the type of customer they want. Their idea of a customer is someone who's looking for something expensive and exclusive, not a specific watch. That type of person they can "consult" and then sell something with a juocy comission. The rest needs to be transformed into that type of customer by virtue of these sorts of "offers to establish a purchase history". And to be fair, the non-enthusiast client is the majority of people walking into these stores, inquiring about trends and such. At least that's what I am told, enthusiasts are absolutely insignificant.

Well said. I guess they just generalize everyone that's looking for a hype piece is a reseller/flipper
