There is always a risk with older watches so how well you trust it is a risk / reward decision everyone personally has to take.
Quality of steel in more modern watches is greatly improved over vintage. So lder watches can have pitting under the case which impacts water resistance.
Definitely getting in touch with a local watchmaker prior to purchasing is a great idea. I know mine will review high res picutes of the watch and advise me on condition before I purchase.
