Seiko 5 GMT first outing. Low Light Test Review Notes part 1

Took it to the movies. As I've probably mentioned i'm a storyboard artist so sometimes I take notes in movies with a little journalist notepad using the light of the movie to write, when plotting a film it's important to know roughly which minute/page number of the script the main plot beats fall on. I have conducted this test with most of my watches as we all know it's no good pulling a phone out in the cinema. The GMT faired reasonably well, i used the triangle to track the minutes but the rehaut was next to invisible i instead had to estimate time with the gmt bezel , it's no where near as good as using a dive bezel but it was passable and it being friction as opposed to click meant it was silent and adjustable down to the minute. Still it was stiff enough not to have moved throughout the film and carrying a squirming 2 year old on my arms on the walk home.

Chronos are the worst for this job, at least for me with the little subdials, apple watch was the best at tracking the time using multiple splits on stopwatch but distracting to others like the phone and likewise the gshock square does not fair well in these low light conditions and often i would have to tuck it into my jacket to check the time using the light without catching the peripheral attention of others, my best analog watch for this type of test was the Seiko Sumo/zelos mako using the bezel to track the time the alpinist was a close second as the chapter ring is more towards the centre of the dial (though this required more thinking to offset the beginning of the film), it doesn't get caught in shadow like the steep rehaut of the ssk003.

It’s definitely hard to beat Lumibrite

You need a MM300 with a 7 jewel high frequency quartz and dive bezel, I know one that's for sale at a very reasonable price 😉

Sorry but I still love your Alpinist, the new GMT comes in a close second though 👍

Hahaha, Honestly i respect the tuna... but it's not for me, it's wonderfully toolish but my next quartz will be a spring drive, my go to quartz is my g shock for these things definitely a bidirectional bezel for everyday use. But i'll keep it in mind. lol

Love the alpinist tooo! It still gets the most wrist time. GMT is a fun summer watch though, nice for travelling and wont be impossible to replace if it gets damaged while i'm out galavanting in europe.

Always interesting how people use their watches! I would imagine a chrono would work best but as you pointed out, low lume and small subdials can make it hard to read at night. Maybe something with a running minute counter on the main dial like the Damasko DC80 would work well (however I don't think need something so accurate haha)
