Playing drums wif a mechanical?

Does anybody have first hand, long term experience wif playing the drums while wearing a mechanical watch?

Personally I feel anything except for a G-$hock or a mechanical watch wif an antishock gasket around the whole movement (eg. Certina DS and Ball Amortiser) would eventually just fall apart. I am however very open to being proven wrong.

All the best.

This Oris Art Blakey special edition with its drumhead dial should be able to cope :-) But wouldn’t bet too much money on it…

It's a good way to make sure you're isolating movement to your wrists!

I didn't think drummers wore watches, "because they kept their own time." Am I right? High 5?

They can’t wear mechanical !! They might be Off Beat!! 😉😜

Liberty DeVitto (Billy Joel Band) wore his watch around his ankle back in the 70ties. 😄

I had this same question a few weeks ago so I googled it. Seems like the general consensus is that it's probably not that great of an idea.

That said, on one occasion I played drums for probably 20 minutes before realizing I had my Tudor Black Bay on my wrist, and it still works.

I err on the side of caution and don't wear one while drumming.

I feel like it would be kind of annoying to have the weight of a mechanical. Quartz makes a lot of sense there. I wouldn't expect it do much damage in the short term, but it's probably going to mess up the time keeping and increase wear relative to regular use. Manual wind would probably have an edge over automatic there too, for weight and wear reasons.

Just take your watch off when drumming. Why would you need one on when drumming anyway?

Drumming with a pre shock resistant watch no , but otherwise any other watch would do ! The real test is an atlas copco pneumatic jack hammer while trying to break up trachite or andocite granite . NOW that will test a watch ..

During my soundcheck before the show, sometimes I’ll wear my Seiko Willard or Samurai while I do the soundcheck & played the drums for about 30-40 minutes. Been doing it for more than a year, no harm done so far.

But during the show I never wear my watch. For an hour and a half show, I prefer to wear a wrist band for sweating hands.

This watch is pretty cool, has a built in metronome. I usually use my lighter watches (titanium or carbon fiber) when I play drums.

·

I guess drums weren't invented until after quartz watches were invented.

·

I play the drums and guitar. The only thing I change is that I tighten up my strap or bracelet if I’m playing so they’re not moving around a lot ;)

Firearms though, that’s a different story if you’re really worried about “shock.”

Yeah, if you hit the range a lot, it’s something to consider for mechanical / automatic movements (even some quartz for that matter!)

Cool question!

Since we know that swinging a golf club or a tennis racquet will likely destroy a mechanical watch over time...you can be pretty certain that smashing drumsticks on drumheads will create similar forces to destroy your timepiece.

Definitely stick with a G-Shock if you fancy banging on the drum...

I reckon if you were Jimmi Hendrick’s drummer in “ The Experience “ or Keith Moon from “The Who” then hmmmm maybe not but if you playing brushes in a nightclub with Jazz so “ the type of drumming needs to be defined too.
