Watch Expectations

Yesterday's post was great, as I think we all got to learn a lot about our hobbies. There was a ton of variety, and that was something that I expected, but I did not expect the number of musicians and bikers to comment. Certainly super cool!

Speaking of expectations, what's an example in which a watch either exceeded, or failed to meet your expectations?

For me, I've had a lot of watches that have exceeded my expectations. One of the earliest examples for me was the Timex Expedition Scout 40. I got one last Spring to try out, and I was blown away by that $30 watch. Loved the Indiglo, and was just generally impressed by the quality of the watch (given the price).

On the flipside, I have had a few watches that have failed to meet expectations. One recent example is the Momentum Sea Quartz 30 (my WRUR for today). I love the design of the watch, and generally think that the build quality and value are good. However, mine has some pretty bad QC-related issues, and as such, has made mine a watch that I don't foresee keeping for all that much longer.

So how about you? Have a positive or negative expectation story?

For the full review of the Timex, I reviewed it on Primer Peak: https://www.primerpeak.com/timex-expedition-scout-40-review-in-the-field-2023/

Thanks for sharing - I have the momentum on my list, hoping that the QC issues are nothing major. But it's sounds like it is, time to drop it down the list.

My biggest watch disappointment was my first automatic watch, an Seiko SNK809. I had been wearing Citizen Eco-Drive quartz watches for more than a decade by the time I decided to try an automatic. I got on YouTube, and saw influencers praising the SNK809 as an amazing watch, so I foolishly believed them. It was cheap, rattly, inaccurate, and not really all that good looking...

For me, the Sea Quartz 30 exceeded my expectations. I ordered it because it's a Canadian brand, and a cool looking retro design. When it arrived I was impressed by how well built it was, and how comfortable it was on wrist. Maybe I got lucky, but mine has no QC issues at all.

I posted about it in one of my earlier posts, but mine has really bad alignment all over the place. Bezel, movement to the dial/hands, and even the day is a little messy. On top of that, the bezel action is really bad, sloppy and too light.

Now, my watch is just a single example, and as @KristianG put in his post, his is fine. It's a lot of watch for the money, just a bummer that my specific one isn't great.

In fairness, I don't worry about the second hand hitting every marker(mine happens to be very close/right on all of them), and as long as the bezel turns/lines up, and doesn't get knocked around easily, I don't worry about the "feel". So I guess it all comes down to expectations and what we value.

I was worried it would be a cheap watch that felt cheap to handle, but that has not been my experience.

So out of all the watches I own, the Sea Quartz 30 is the one that bugs me the most. The seconds hand is off and doesn’t land properly on the seconds marker. I’ve also noticed from time to time (no pund intended) that the time can be off by a lot and other times it’s fine. It baffles me. Other than that I like the watch, it’s just quirky.🤷‍♂️

My Pagani Design PD1701v3 "Speedy" homage has exceeded all of my expectations ... it really is a fabulous watch for the price!

Failed to meet? Well, probably the biggest disappointment is my Timex Expedition "Atlantis" re-issue that I bought a couple of years ago ... feels very cheap compared to a near identical model from Timex that was my daily-driver thru a good chunk of the 1990's

Love me some Peter Gabriel. Need to grab more of his albums on vinyl.

Failed Seiko, exceeded Hanhart

My Timex Expedition Scout, Seiko 5, and Edifice all exceed my expectations. A disappointing watch was a fashion watch before I started collecting.
