SBGM221 Water Resistance?

Hi Everyone!

So I love the SBGM221.  And I am going on a trip this year with my partner.  Looking for a great GMT, but i want it to be a GADA watch.  Does anyone with the SBGM221 swim with it?  In the ocean as well?

I had a BB pro, but didnt quite bond with it.  I am a seiko man, and am looking for a GS.  Had my eyes on the SBGN027 and SBGE225 as well, but not sure if I am in love with either of those.

Thanks!

I wouldn't.  I think stated WR is 30m and it's almost certainly not designed for any water activities.

It does have a screw down crown if I recall correctly so they might be underselling it but by the numbers it would be risky to swim with.

great point.  thanks!  I didnt know it had a screw down crown though.  so that gives me a little hope.  But yeah.  I think i would feel more comfy with somethign with 100m at least

I’m as bold as anyone when it comes to getting my watches wet, but when the maniacally a watch “splash resistant”…well that’s a no-go for me.
Maybe this would work?

If you want a Grand Seiko gmt watch that has good water resistance, SBGE255 (253 and 257) all have 200m (20 bar) water resistance. Having said that, I don’t take my dive watch with 600m water resistance to my pool. :)

thats a nice one too... unsure on my feeling of quartz lux watches yet...

The SGBM221 does not have a screw-down crown and is advertised as "splash-resistant at 30m. I would highly recommend not swimming with it. I agree with jcRUwithMe that there are other GS that are more GADA with water resistance. I do think the SBGM221 is a fantastic watch that can be dressy or casual, but it very much is not designed for swimming.

I’m a GS nut 🤪

I love the Evo9 , heritage and GS divers and will ONLY buy watches with screw crowns.  I swim / shower with all my watches.

I can straight up tell you the GS GMT to get for GADA: the Prospex LX!

spring drive, stunning looks 😍, Ti, zaratsu, screw down 100m .. and slightly cheaper!

If I ever get a GMT , it would be this SNR033

In my early collecting days, I took a dive watch to the ocean. I assume I forgot to screw down the crown after adjusting for the timezone change, and I got water in the watch and ruined it. Since then, I got a habit of double and triple checking my screw down crown and not taking my watches into a body of water. I was looking at my wruw pictures, and i still see one occasion where I didn’t screw down the crown after winding it for the morning. The water is just not worth the risk for me. 😁

This isn't quite what you asked, but I'll put it out there. I have an SBGJ249, so same case, also 30m water resistance (and no screw down crown). I wash it under the tap all the time, so it can take more than a splash. I think Grand Seiko undersells the water resistance (as the guy at the boutique hinted). That said, I don't think I'll risk testing it by swimming with it.

I think I would wear that watch, and bring a beater diver or G-Shock for swimming. At the beach, since you mentioned salt water, I'd be as worried about sand as water. All the zaratsu you know. If you like this watch as a daily, other than this trip, how likely are you to want to go swimming with it?

·

Do not swim with that watch.

It’s a completely different look than a GS or a Black Bay, but I picked this up this past December and beyond thrilled with it.

200m WR, faraday cage for anti-magnetism, extra shock protection around the movement, 40mm bezel with AMAZING action, screw down crown of course, and all at 12.5mm think. Oh, and also only $2,000 US.

And the movement is accurate well within COSC standards with a 56hr power reserve.

I also think it’s beautiful.

If I was to pick up a GS GMT it would be either this one

Or this one

And I would comfortably swim with either of those.

Yup, that's right.  I don't know where I got in my head that it had a screwdown crown.

It means stay at least 200 meters (20bar) away from water.😂

this is a cool watch!

I‘m someone who is quite tough on my watches and get a lot of flak for doing things that other watch folks think is irresponsible like swimming with a Speedy Pro. I tend to look beyond the rating itself and see what the manufacturer recommends, because it shows their confidence in what should or shouldn’t be allowed with watches.

The Speedy is 50m but Omega lists that as ok for surface swimming. The SBGM221 is 30m and Seiko says that’s only good for splashes and rain.

I never took my SBGM221 into the water, but wouldn’t have anyway because of the letter straps it was always on.
