I think I have a problem...

Friends,

I think I am ready to admit that I have a problem...  I came on here a few week ago and made a post about thinking about downsizing to get a more graily watch.

In that time I have sold off a whopping ONE watch from the collection and accidentally bought two more watches...

Hear me out... I was at costco... and as lover of costco, I could not contain myself when I saw the 5KX and Baby Tuna there for good prices.  I've been wanting to check these watches out and their return policy is too good to ignore.  Plus they were like half price.

So here is the SOTC as of May 2022.

Lets go through them from least interesting to most interesting?

  1. Apple Watch - I wear this on the right wrist opposite my real watch.  Love this thing actually.  I have been detoxing from tech by using this tech haha.  I use it and leave my phone at home most days and its incredible at keeping me off watch cruch and instagram ALL THE TIME!
  2.  SNK803 - The cream dial was my first mechanical watch.  I don't really wear it anymore, but its so cheap that it feels like the sentimental value is worth more than the sale price.
  3. SRPD93 5KX - This is a new acquisition from the Costco run yesterday. On first inspection it is a very interesting watch.  I love that its mechanical. It is visually more interesting than the SKX that I have.  I like that it has hacking and handwinding.
  4. SNE567 Baby Tuna - Also a new acquisition.  I have been interested in a tuna for a while, but have baby wrists, so was looking at this one.  Was concerned about the quartzness of it, but have been less concerned with that the more mature I am in my watch experience.  The case is very interesting and its a very compelling product.  The dial feels a lot flatter than the 5KX which is interesting to me.  I find the thing that gets better with more expensive watches is the depth of the dial and I really appreciate deep dials more and more.
  5. SKX013 - Great watch.  My first diver.  I wore this a lot but has been replaced on my wrist by my turtle and willard.
  6. GA2100 Casioak - This is a great watch.  I wear it while playing sports, so it goes through a lot of tournament weekends and things like that. I will wear any watch while doing activities, but its nice to have a light watch for sports like biking or ultimate frisbee!
  7. SRP777 Turtle - I originally bought this watch to see if I would like the willard.  It was bigger, but I still loved it and eventually got the 151 with the intention to sell the turtle.  I never did get around to selling the turtle and find that I still wear this watch a-lot.  I usually keep the willard on a nato or rubber uncle seiko strap, while the turtle lives on a bracelet. I really love this watch and this particular example keeps excellent time.  Its a bit heavy to wear while doing everything in life, however its a great watch that I don't feel bad about beating up
  8.  Swatch X Omega Mission to Mars - I waited on line for a number of hours in NYC to get one of these.  It was a madhouse.  I really wanted to get the mission to mars because of its connection to the Alaska project.  I thought it was the most interesting of the collabs because it has a lot of Speedy significance through that connection and also it is one of the super colorful ones that would never be mistaken for a real one.  I like this watch, but have not fallen in love with it.  It is one of the ones on the chopping block!
  9.  King Seiko 45-7010 - This is a pretty incredible watch.  I got it on reddit a few years ago and it sat for like two years.  I started wearing it this year and am in love.  It keeps incredible time and in the sunlight the dial and case shine like nothing else I own.  It really is special.  It has a beautiful (repainted) linen dial that I get lost in sometimes.  I love handwinding it when I wear it and i love how small and slim it is.  I love that it keeps incredible time compared to my other mechanicals.  I can feel it even though I don't have a timegrapher or anything.  It just feels like it keeps excellent time.  I don't really know why I didn't love the watch at first, but I am very glad I have kept it and nowam wearing it.
  10.  SPB151 Willard X (Uemura) - This is the watch that I wear the most, however I do have a love hate relationship with it.  I think this is close to my perfect everyday watch.  It is subtle with the black dial and fits my wrist really well for being so big.  I think the proportions are spot on and I love the cushion case.  While the turtle is a big brute of a watch this one is more subtle and sits nicely within the confines of my wrist.  This dial is much more three dimensional than all the other watches I have (save for the KS).  The hands are multidimensional with the crease down the middle and its nicely polished and the little lip on the sapphire is a really nice touch that my eye is drawn to every time I look at it.  I love the light signal seconds hand and the applied indicies.  Everything shines really nicely that is polished.  Now for the bad.  This is one of those watches that gains like 30-40 seconds a day.  I can feel how fast it is and it gives me some anxiety haha.  I have not decided if I should get rid of the watch altogether or maybe get rid of this specific watch and try my luck with another one.  Or maybe just get this specific one regulated.  I really think that if this watch was keeping better time (within 15 spd) I would wear this and almost nothing else.  I would probably certainly sell my turtle and other dive watches (yes pretty much every other watch, haha)

If you have read this far, thanks!  I appreciate that you have come with me on this journey of my problem.  Any advice (especially on the willard situation) comments or general praise is always welcome.

Cheers!

not enough you need more watche s😁

Great collection! I would say get what you like and what you consider as a grail vs what people considered as a grail watch.

·

Love that KSK

I think you have your answer.  Spend the $100 getting the Willard regulated and try that for a month or so.  I imagine you will feel the overlap in your collection much more acutely when the watch you acknowledge as being your favorite except for the timing becomes your favorite including the timing.

One broad question you might consider is whether you keep buying divers and diver styles because you genuinely prefer them or because you feel the Willard isn't living up to where it ought to.

side bar comment: it seems costco will have generally the same collection of watches but with a few unique items found in each store. always wonder what i might be missing!

I'm not a follow the grail brick road guy, if it Oooo's and Ahhh's me and I can afford it, it's mine. I'm digging the microbrand world and right now I'd say the NTH Barracuda on a Bor is at the top of my "Ooooooo shit" list. And I'm talkin lots a O's on that shnit!!!

You found a baby Tuna at Costco?  I've seen the 5KX there but not the Baby Tuna.  Looks like I need to "volunteer" to make a Costco run this weekend but drive a little further and try a different one. Love their return policy (and bulk snacks/ gotta maintain my girth somehow).

+1 on choosing your own grail. Good luck!

This is a great point!  I was thinking about buying a timegrapher and doing it myself.  I do have a lot of overlap, and in the shower this morning it was stressing me out and i wanted to get down to three haha.

I'd strongly suggest starting with a cheaper watch than a Willard if you're want to regulate....it's not rocket science but having broken a not inexpensively priced watch before while trying to regulate it myself (SPB127 I miss you....), it is extremely possible to screw it up.

Also, it's always worthwhile building a relationship with a good watchmaker.

Luckily I have many cheap watches in my collection!  Haha yeah I have been half heartedly looking for one for a while. But I never find someone I trust.

Sell one to get 2 new, i dont see the problem :P!
