What is your Favorite style of hands?

Have you ever wondered about the fascinating history behind those little pointers on a watch's face?

In the early days, sundials were used to tell time. They had sticks that cast shadows to indicate the hour. Later, mechanical clocks emerged, and they used a single hand to point to the hour.

It wasn't until the 15th century that minute hands were introduced. This innovation allowed for more precise timekeeping, making it easier to track minutes and seconds.

As time progressed, different watch hand styles became popular. From simple straight hands to elegant Breguet hands, each design reflected the era's taste and fashion.

Today, watch hands come in various shapes and sizes, catering to different watch designs and functionalities. The evolution of watch hands has come a long way, enhancing timekeeping accuracy and adding an artistic touch to these cherished timepieces.

So, the next time you glance at your watch, take a moment to appreciate the rich history behind those unassuming watch hands.

Cathedral style hands happen to be my favorite style especially when the second hand is exstended all the way to the end of the dial. What yours?

I'm okay with all styles but mercedes and cathedral, with a preference for dauphine and sword styles.

·

dauphine hands. i like the sharp tip and the overhanging end.

·

I like Snowflake hands

·

Depends on the watch; but in general more of a fan of simple, baton or leaf style hands. Not a fan of snowflake, mercedes, arrow or plongeur hands.

·

Anything but mercedes hands, not keen on SMP skeletonised swords either tbh.

·

Dauphine Hands!

·

I like all of them except for spade hands. The correct hand selection to match the design of the case and dial is something that can make or break a watch.

  • For sporty watches, arrow hands are fantastic.

  • For legibility I like baton/leaf/alpha

  • For elegance I prefer dauphine and breguet

  • I’ve seen sword hands done well in the most foolish and the most elegant watches.

·

It really depends on the watch type, the case abd dial design.

Agreed.

Depends on the style of the watch.

·

It so depends on the face, though I tend towards liking sword and syringe hands best.

·

Syringe prove to be the most legible for me. Love most styles except Mercedes and Snowflake.

·

Cathedral

·

Depending on the style of the watch, on dressy pieces I'll tend to be less regarding but generally I don't like hands where the hour hand can disappear behind the minute hand. Given my agffection towards divers, I'll naturally go towards thicker, more legible hands.

·

Baton - simple and precise. I also like the syringe ones on my Sinn 104.

·

Batons and Cathedral!

I also like rectangular hands like on a Datejust. Are those also batons?

·

I like dauphine and breguet hands on a dress watch, sword or arrow for something more sporty.

·

These hands 😍

Yea the Mercedes hands feel plaid out for me as well. So you don’t have a favorite?!

Indeed, probably sword hands, tho obviously depends on the watch style. 👍

Thanks for the interesting post. Generally I prefer dauphine for dress watches and sword for divers. But honestly, I’m pretty much up for any style as long as it works with the watch. For example, Mercedes hands don’t bother me on a Rolex or older Tudor. Snowflake cool especially on an older Tudor ;). Quirky Sinn U1/U50 hands, I’m game.

It was my pleasure but thank you for the compliment.

Yea I agree with what your saying for sure!

·

I’m a sucker for syringe, dauphine, leaf and breguet.

·

I despise the Mercedes hands

I'm fine with the rest

·

It really depends on the watch dial type, I like them all.

·

I appreciate you sharing this. I was unaware of its history. I learned something from it, and it is extremely informative.

Nice post! I like a good broad arrow hand.

The black is best config.

·

Dauphine hands ✋🤚

·

I will add my thoughts on this later. I have saved this thread to remind me to do so.

·

Not a fan of plongeur. Too end-heavy for my tastes.

Plongeur is Franch for diver, not plunger BTW.

·

I think baton has square ends. Too blunt for me. My Timex Easy Reader has them and I'd prefer rounded or pointed ends. I can pull up a stock photo upon request.

@Mr.Santana can someone that is more proficient with the app explain how to access the News section? It is real.
