Watchmaking

Hi all,

What is the best book/resources to help one get started in watch repair/ watchmaking?

I would start with YouTube. I think it’s probably really helpful to be able to watch somebody do it as many times as you want.

I think George Daniels' 'Watchmaking' is considered the gold standard but depending on your own knowledge you may be better to look to free resources and go from there.

I would also agree that YouTube is a good place to start, especially if we are talking about common movements. The ability to see somebody actually perform the steps is far more instructional than what a book can offer.

However, books are very good references, and sometimes it is not obvious which steps a video has left out. For example, it always seems that most videos are short on the lubrication steps compared to what is shown in the manufacturer movement specs. (There are exceptions, of course.)

As previously mentioned, you can find youtube channels such as wristwatch revival that talk about watchmaking, and if you want to you can ask your local watchmaker for advise. Cheers!

YouTube channel “Watch Repair Tutorials”.

No fluff, no bs. He’s got a series you can go step by step through a movement with him.

I’d also recommend buying an affordable watch, preferably hand wind with no date. No complications at all. They just complicate the process….lol

You should have a look at Mark Lovick, both his YouTube channel and his online course at watchfix.com which is not too expensive, and a really good intro.

Also BHI - the British Horological Institute - has some pretty well respected distance (online) learning courses. Maybe look into that, starting with a Google search.
