I Hate to Ask…

I hate to be gross, but I got into an argument with my wife yesterday and now I’m wondering if I’m crazy… Whenever I go to the bathroom, I take my watch off. I suppose I’m a bit OCD when it comes to being clean, and my OCD tendencies started long before COVID. When everyone was saying, “just wash your hands, use hand sanitizer, be clean…” etc. nothing really changed for me. I’m already a very clean person. So, when going to the bathroom, I take my watch off and put it in my pocket. When I’m done washing my hands, the watch goes back on.

Well my wife thinks I’m crazy. She googled the topic and apparently Google answers also point to me being insane. “When you wipe you don’t get sh*t on your wrist,” one reply said. True, but I still don’t want my watch touching the toilet seat or being anywhere close to toilet water…

So now I’m curious, am I as insane as my wife thinks, or do other watch nerds also take their watches off?

Like when some stranger tells me after I take a leak in the bathroom at the local bar, “Hey you forgot to wash your hands!” And I reply, “I tend not to piss on my hands, you might but not me.”

You don't wash your hands in the bathroom because you pee on them. You wash your hands because it's probably been several hours since you last washed your hands and this is a good opportunity to make them clean again

I don't remove mine but I can see leather getting wet during the handwash, so it's not 100% crazy.

Yeah I'm a psycho. I wash my hands all the time, and I try not to touch the doorknob after because of people who don't wash their hands. I also don't use hand dryers and tend to also avoid paper towel dispensers.

Also, for the record, I don't take my watch off while peeing and washing my hands. This was more an argument for using the toilet, which is every bathroom visit for the wife.

If I'm just washing my hands or peeing I don't remove the watch, even with a leather strap. I'm usually careful to not get the strap soaking wet and I've never had a problem. I just don't want the watch near the seat or toilet water.

I'm not surprised... but I had to know if I'm alone. And it looks like I mostly am haha

That seems a little unnecessary to me. I'm not that afraid of germs.

I only take my watch off when going to the bathroom if I'm going to wash my hair, as that might cause splashes down my arms. I don't want to risk getting stains on the strap. Also, I think it feels icky to get wet under the watch.

Fair enough... I'm not worried about the watch strap getting wet. I suppose I'm not necessarily afraid of germs either. But it's so easily avoidable that I just assumed it was normal

Eh…I’m all for cleanliness, but realistically this is a modern cultural convenience rather than a necessary health thing. You should wash your hands before putting them in your eyes/mouth/nose. Otherwise, you’re fine. 15 minutes after washing your hands you have 10s of thousands of bacteria on them not harming anyone.

I know what you and the rest of this country will know by the end of August. Get back to me then, take care.

I will check back at the end of August. I hope to be much wiser than I am now

Woah. You don’t use the bathroom outside your home?

I hardly did up until high school haha

Wear your stool watch. New category

I'll go with a Casio for mine

I do the same thing. I remove my watch and ring and drop them in my front pocket before washing my hands, whether or not it's a bathroom or in the kitchen before I start to cook. I never thought of it for sanitary reasons, I just figured if I got soap on my watch and ring, I'd need to rinse the soap off them and if I rinse them then I have to dry them. Easier just to remove first.

I agree. I take my watch off when I cook as well.

Had a coworker back when I used to work in kitchens that once told me « I wash my D.. no need to wash my hands ». Oh well 🤷‍♂🤣 here goes your pizza 🍕 🤣🤣🤣

Sadly there are cooks like this... they don't deserve to be cooks in my book. I hope they get shut down.

Relatively speaking, not all that often. I work from home a lot. If you follow the thread, however, not long after that post I was talking to the OP about public places. So it's covered there. Again, keep reading.

Even at the office all day, maybe once or twice to take a piss... No much out in public.

I rarely and it hasn t changed.

Pretty simple rules... be clean and have some personal hygiene.

When I see someone walk out after holding their sausage without washing their hands…I just assume they weren’t raised right.

Also lazy lol

Unless you’re wearing a vintage watch of uncertain water resistance, then yes, you’re crazy.

I do mostly wear vintage watches. But it's more for the germs than to prevent the watches from getting wet

·
William

you might be crazy but it has nothing to do with your watch particularly if it is vintage

don't overthink it do what works for you I have been married over thirty years to the same woman I have given her any number of reasons to call me crazy just get used to it💪

We both have our crazy habits. But at least they are tolerable, neither of us are into drugs or gambling or anything too self sabotaging lol

It was however repaired some $250.00 later. Good as new now.👍

Lesson learned! Glad you got your watch sorted

That's a rather neat watch he has there

As you watch the 75 people pushing the front door or the bathroom door open with the palm of their hand at the restaurant while you are required to adhere to social distancing, and the bartender grabs the beer your waiter grabs said beer and serves it to you. Yeah sure, Covid, what a scam.

That's one way to think about it

·

Well everyone, I never would have imagined that this would eventually be the post to obtain the "Monster Thread" badge for me, but here we are...

Thanks for voting, commenting, and being part of this watch journey with me.

PS: don't forget to wash your hands!
