Colour in a collection

Just finished watching the latest Watchfinder video where @AndrewMorgan and Tom had @AdrianBarker on to discuss whether watches are getting boring. I’m sure the answer here would be a resounding no, but I was curious as the boys were saying that brands were producing mostly black and white dial watches. Now I mainly buy from independents, who Adrian quite rightly points out tend to make more unusual choices, or in my opinion are at least more competitively priced, so maybe this is something I’m missing, but I do purchase from the larger brands and this isn’t something I’ve noticed.

Just wondering how this is for all if you and if anyone knows if it’s particularly different between the watch enthusiast and non enthusiast buyers.

So what’s the most prevalent colour in your collections? I’m happy to admit that mines black, but I don’t have any white dials, and just 2 silvers, which I’ll group with the whites, and second place for me would be blue.

I had to carry out a count, maybe I should add it as a field in my app.

·

I seem to have near equal parts Orange, White, Carbon Fibre, and Black.

You’re making an app? That’s great I use WatcheePro but I’m always up for trying something new.

·

That sounds a bit like mine. Maybe the guys were right and black is the predominant colour.

I like the sound of that. I don’t have any orange and have never had Carbon Fibre. Though I am eyeing up the new Tissot Siderals.

This is just like how all cars are now white, gray, or silver. People buy them, they make them.

Yep Adrian made a similar point.

No, sorry that was badly worded! I mean in the app that I use you can add as many fields as you like. Oddly I've not put the colour as I've got pictures against each entry, but that doesn't help if you want a quick count by colour.

Anyway, being a bit sad I've now added a field for dial colour and a second for subdial colour, and completed the entries.

It beat watching whatever the Mrs had on TV.

I actually have a decent amount of non black dials, that being said, my specific likes trend military/tool and I like that. Don't give a flying pigs butt if it's boring to others. It's not their collection 😂.

I have noticed that I do also have quite a few "black dials" that have a surprising amount or a good POP of color in them.

I’m with you though for me it’s mostly when I’m supposed to be keeping an eye on the kids and got their cartoons on.

I’m also a fan of that it’s what drew me to my Mido.

Black dials are generally the best. Having my watch look good is important and I like my watches to be a bit on the subtle side.

That said, I really like my Nomos with a white/silver dial.

On the other hand, colourful watches tend to not look as good. I like my turquoise Escapement Time, but it's not as good looking as black dials. I just got it as a fun change of pace.

Fair enough. Black is definitely the most common dial colour in my collection, but I like a bit of variety and my favourite diss as dials are my blue ones.

I voted black, but I don’t really know if that’s true. I am traveling, so I couldn’t do a check of my collection. If it’s not black, then it is blue.

That’s great. Black’s the most common for me but blue is definitely the favourite. Probably helps that my wife also lives my blue dials.

I'll admit I am a bit color blind both in real life and regarding my watch collection. It has nothing to do with intent whatsoever, I simply buy what catches my eye.

That’s the best way to do it. I was just wondering if there was a colour people tended to gravitate towards either subconciously or conciously. You don’t have to answer this if I’m being impertinent but can you tell meter first thing that grabs you when it comes to watches? Apologies if I’m being rude by asking.

Deep, jet black dials attracts me the most.

Wow. Those are some beautiful watches. I know what you mean about the non-watch nerds buying more ”standard” colours it’s a bit like how when I’m in the market for a new car it’ll be white, black or silver and from a well known and regarded manufacturer. I was just curious about the enthusiasts.

I know...I drive a pearl white Toyota Avalon...that's not the car I wanted to drive in my imagination...that car would have been this one...

Then practicality and my wife's POV pointed me to the Avalon 😉

Do you have the Seiko SARX029 yet? The urushi lacquer is quite stunning.

·

As a traditionalist and a formalist, I am a white dial supremacist. I think I have 3 black dials. No blue.

I have a GS which I believe has it

Yep that’s why I’ve got a white Subaru Forrester. Not a bad car, but not something that’ll get your blood pumping.

But I make up for that with my watches.

I’ve been looking at the Sideral also haha.

I don’t have a carbon case currently, rather a Carbon dial, Oris TT3 Chrono.

Colour is always nice in collections. I am biased however, I love nautical instruments and colours. So orange fits right in.

That Oris is nice 👍. I like colour I haven’t found a full orange dial that works for me yet but I like orange detailing.

Like my Mido.

Currently 1 blue, 1 champagne, 1 salmon/copper

I have conservative dial colour choices. But I'm partial to a vibrant strap. White, orange, powder blue or candy pink. Especially on my solar tuna.

I like that a great way to bring a bit of colour into a collection. And you can change it up as often as you like, to keep it interesting. Great idea. 👍

AliExpress (if you have the patience) is good for cheap and cheerful straps. I don't think I've ever paid more than 10€ inc. postage.

I’ve never used Ali Express. But I have bought a few straps on Amazon that were pretty cheap.
