Grand Seiko ‘Hotaka Peaks’ Spring Drive GMT

I am drawn to the design and watchmaking philosophy of Grand Seiko. While 'variety,' or more aptly 'accumulator,' sums up my collecting style, I find myself focusing on Grand Seiko more than other brands in its category.

Special thanks to @Mr.Dee.Bater for his numerous posts on GS, which I found immensely helpful. I also appreciate his patience in answering my random questions. I also want to thank @Edge168n for gifting the Watch Crunch community with the line "potato quality phone camera," succinctly describing the reason for the poor quality of the photos I post. Prose like that deserves special recognition.

Description and Specs from Grand Seiko:

The black textured dial evokes the distinct beauty of the Hotaka mountain range, with its many dark peaks and ridges having been formed by volcanic activity. This dial sits inside a steel case that measures 44mm in diameter and 14.9mm in thickness. Alternating mirror-polished and hairline surfaces across different planes give the it a unique sparkle, and with its down-turned lugs and crown moved from three o’clock and offset to the four o’clock position, SBGE277 wears comfortably on the wrist. The rotating bezel has a durable sapphire overlay with LumiBrite underneath, as do the dial indexes and hands.

SBGE277 is powered by Spring Drive Caliber 9R66. It features a 72-hour power reserve and an accuracy of ±.5 seconds per day. Around the dial is a 24-hour chapter ring, and along with the 24-hour bezel, SBGE277 can be utilized to track three separate time zones.

Must've been good to look at the dial under the sun

Tbh, only a few GS's appeal to me - this is one of 'em!

Yes, the dial really pops in the sunlight. Hard to capture using my phone camera.

I would be staring at that all day. Stunning piece and that mesmerizing smooth seconds movement 😍

Congratulations, absolute fire! My only advice is don’t buy a GS unless you have the money to buy at least 5 eventually…ask me how I know.

Love this case and the bezel in particular. I guess I have sort of a sibling to your spring drive:

Is that SBGJ239G? I was so close to choosing it. It's gorgeous. Once I replenish the budget, I will be on the hunt for another GS for sure.

Correct, it is an SBGJ239. I loved the green dial and wanted to add a high-beat movement to my collection, but I am not interested in any El Primero powered watches, so this ticked all the crazy, imaginary boxes 😄.

I love how discrete that dial is, I imagine because it’s so dark most of the time when it catches the light perfectly it’s even better

·

Rich, I've been eyeing this GS for a long while now! Congratulations! I picked up my Grand Seiko SBGE255 GMT last year as my choice for a blue dial watch. Blue being my favorite color. Now I spend a lot of time thinking about adding this watch to my collection. GS just makes masterpieces

Thanks, Brad. 100% agree with you. When the sun hits the dial, you see the textured surface clearly. I also like the way GS printed the 24hr ring on the rehaut.

Thanks, Fred! I've been ogling your GS (and many other pieces from your collection) for a while. My top choices were this one and green (SBGJ239) as those colors are under-represented in my collection. The red hand on the black dial won me over.

It's so hard to discibe that dial until you see it. Pictures do give you a lot but seeing it in person 💥. Ive owned 3 GS watches. I do miss my Snowflake: on a blue rubber strap it is so light and just a perfect GADA. I'll probably have another... I digress. I never tried on a steel GS because my mindset was GS = the best Titanium finish in the world. I kept eyeing the SBGE255 and finally tried it on. The bracelet is the best GS ive ever worn. Now I want your GMT! Who can justify any of this madness LOL!

You're welcome. Plenty of models to choose from and they often sell at a discount. Good luck!

This is such a staggeringly cool watch though I've always been curious how this wears because the bezel looks rather oversized.

Initially, I had the same concerns. However, with a case diameter off 44 and L2L of 50mm, it feels balanced on wrist.

No getting around it’s heavier and larger than many of the watches I’ve purchased recently. However, the clasp has micro-adjustments, which I fiddled with for a great fit.
