Did you ever gift someone a watch without being 100% sure they like it?

How did it turn out?

I'm 50/50, but they were both dw5600s. Not exactly taking much of a financial risk in trying. One of them didn't wear watches before and still doesn't. The other wore watches before and now wears the g shock.

A and B! As if it only happens once...🤣

My son in law is a big guy, I was comfortable giving him my fully serviced 48mm Breitling Superavenger watch a few days before he started a great new opportunity with a major bank in some computer related design capacity, my daughter thought he needed a different watch from his daily collection of G-Shocks. I never give any serious thought to the watch being too big on his wrist since I have always favoured robust timepieces. My wife fixed the situation by just taking the SA back and allowing the son in law to pick a different watch from my stash one day when I was not around. Sadly for me he did select a watch that I still liked a lot but presents are meant to be sincere, appreciated.

No, watches are gifts from me, to me.

But only to non-WIS.

I mean, he liked it, thought it was cool, but years later still doesn't wear a watch. The one I got him he displays on his desk though, so I think that counts?

My father has seen the watch I’m giving him for retirement, what he hasn’t seen is the box, new clasp and (hopefully) engraving that will be done to it before he receives it. And he didn’t know it was a gift for him, I was just wearing it.

A & B, more than once.

Gifted maybe 10 watches over the years, highlights being

Quartz Aqua Terra to my Dad (ended up buying it back from him)

Omega Ladymatic to sister (loves it and wears occasionally)

Cartier Ballon Bleu to my lovely Mrs (occasional wear)

Hamilton Khaki King quartz to best friend (broke after a year and...)

Seiko Laurel Alpinist to same best mate to replace the broken khaki king (he wears it 24/7)

Seiko 55th anniversary "5" to a mate (left in box in his wardrobe)

Unimatic bubble back look alike to a friend, (got him started in the hobby)

Seiko King Turtle to a workmate (wore it, but lost contact with him )

I'm sure there's others I've forgotten, these are in the last 3-4 years.

So the "hit rate" isn't high but it makes me happy 😁👍🏻👍🏻

Yes! My brother is a big fan of 90s action films so one year for Xmas I got him the Seiko Arnie. He wears it all the time 🙂 or so he tells me 😂

Can I be your mate too?

I think its easier to gift someone watches for someone who ain't into watches (wife, ex-gf thank you😂) but it's harder if the person is into watches (me, hard to satisfy, picky 🤷‍♂️)

·

Yeah, wifey refused to wear it Till today, sadly. A beautiful Paperwork Digital one

·

Exactly the opposity happened to me. My cousin gifted me a wooden watch, which I don’t like at all…. But I’ll still wear from time to time and will keep because it was a gift from her.

·

It’s easier if you really think about the recipient. A friend liked a Pagani Design Speedy homage I have, and so I bought one for him. It’s a Seiko mecha-quartz which is easy for him to deal with, and he enjoys it. It also has him thinking about watches beyond his Apple Watch. So, yes, it was a success.

I always make sure to do my research first. Since I show everyone watches around me all the time, I slip in more neutral designs they might like to get a feel. So I make sure they like it or will be at least likely be receptive to it as a gift. Like I gifted a cousin a watch for a big celebration—a landmark gift basically. And they wear it.
