What Watch should I aim to buy?

Hi, I just want to ask something, maybe a little silly, but something that I’m kind of curious. I am currently awaiting to start my position in a new job as a watch and jewellery retailer. It’s a bit of a mid-range lower-end luxury range which they offer. So stuff like Longines, Rado, Tissot, Baumé Mercier, Edox etc. I was looking to get a nicer watch in the future to fit the whole vibe.

Asking from people who worked with watches before, should I purchase from a brand that my store is carrying or is it fine to wear a different brand during work? My future budget I set myself will be around 2-3K USD, so that’s in the range of a lot luxury watches. I’m currently eyeing on a Sinn 104, but I do like the Longines Zulu Time. I’m also open for suggestions from outside brands. I do really like the brands we carry, for example I love the Rado Captain Cook, but it’s not the Watch I want to get next.

You should always buy what you like! Having said that, Start the job check and out what other employees do... wear only brands in the store or what. Then go from there...I'f the Sinn is #1 for you then get it. Just don't wear it at work... Don't even wear a watch at work?

I work in retail (not watches, but vape shop) & it's frowned upon to use competitor's products . I'd wait a while, you'll almost certainly be able to buy significantly cheaper from stock.

Hmm, tough to gauge. I’m actually the only Male employee there. The previous assistant manager which I will be replacing left so not too sure to gauge. I guess I’ll just wait and see. I’ll probably be wearing my PRX for the time being I guess since we carry that.

I can see that. Just wondering if it’s different in luxury goods area. I was at a higher end Seiko dealer, and the manager was wearing a Richard Mille.

Dance with the gal that brung ya, wear what you currently own and the reps from the watch brands that your store sells will get in a bidding war to make sure you wear their brand.

·

I have my ad looking for a grey dial Baume & Mercier Moonphase( one left in Canada). Do you receive an employee discount on watches from ur employer? Most ads that I visit prefer you wear something from their catalogue.

·

Not in the trade, but as a customer, it would make a good impression if the sales person was wearing the brand I was interested in. So if you can find one you really want from these brands, that would be best of both worlds. An as mentioned, also there might be discounts!

Always interesting to do that

I’m not sure. I’m assuming full time employees do. I’m starting off as a casual first so they can gauge my performance before hiring me as a full time. And for that model, I’m not sure. I haven’t started work with them yet so I’m not exactly sure which models they carry. I live in Australia though

Definitely, if I do purchase from them, either Rado Captain Cook or Longines Zulu Time. Just need to make sure it fits with the suit.

Yeah I can see if someone is wearing a brand that the store doesn't carry that it could be viewed as inappropriate by higher-ups. Personally I think that's petty and imo if you have a Tudor or something not available in your store then it shouldn't matter. But yeah I think you discuss with the company and I'm sure they'll understand. What I would say is don't feel like you're forced to buy one of your own brands because you work there.

·

Some stores allow employees to wear display pieces. Would be ideal!

I would definitely wear something sold in the store. Wear something that is the next level up from the most popular entry level. It gives you an opportunity to upswell.

I would hope so to. My friend who works at Tag across me gets a free Tag to wear. They gave him the smartwatch at first and he complained so much about it that they swapped it out with a Monaco 😂

A big one indeed. It was supposed to be a Carrera but they didn’t have one in stock so they past him the Monaco (he doesn’t own it, it’s on loan to him).

Agree with the comments that you should (a) buy what you want and (b) see about potential employee discounts. Sinn and Longines both have really cool stuff. That being said, have you looked at Nomos? You can find some great pieces in the $2-3K range. And good luck with your new gig!

Thanks! I actually looked into Nomos back when I was considering getting a Junghans. But I probably wouldn’t buy it now because my store only does swiss watches. Maybe it’s something I’ll get in the future. I love the Junghans Max Bill and the Nomos Glaschutte 38. I also say this while staring down the Sinn 104 😂

Look into the history of Longines. Good to know if you are selling them and you will likely be so impressed that is what you will buy. They have the oldest registered trademark of any watch brand. They maintain meticulous records of all parts that go into every single watch and they have those records going back to their beginning. I believe Teddy Baldassarre did a YouTube video touring their factory. Amazing to me they don't sell their watches for 4 times what they do. If I ever see one being worn in the wild I know the person wearing it is of discerning taste.

Yeah, definitely good conversation starters when talking with potential customers. I really do like longines and plan to own one one day. When I start working for this company, maybe a little bit faster. Will be a bit more of conversation starter than my PRX that’s for sure. I love that watch but I see it out in the prowl a little too much.

·

See if you can get the new Longines Moonphase at a discount from your store. That will grab the attention of regulars who already know the existing line, and man, that watch really looks above its price. Compare it to the $8K+ Jaeger Le-Coultre!

·

Better yet, wear the PRX for your work probationary period, and when they bring you on full-time, splurge on the Moonphase to celebrate your first (I assume?) watch gig! :D

Yeah that’s the plan. Probably not the moon phase. Idk, I feel like I’m still too young to wear those watches haha. Gotta wear something my age. It is a cool watch though

Depends what your employer is like. If they don't give a crap, and you can put up with the odd smart arse customer commenting, "So you sell the stuff, but you won't wear it, eh?" then I'd say do whatever you want with your money. But if you want to look like more of a team player, and use your own watch as an example to customers (both of which are quite savvy things to do), I'd look at getting one of those brands sold in the store at an excellent discount and wear it. It's not like Longines, for example, is any hardship to wear. And it's going to be known a hell of a lot better in downtown Adelaide than a bloody Sinn, that's for sure.

Adelaide is full of German descendants though so In Harndorf up Mount Baxter maybe the SINN will be noticed more ! 🙂

Buy a brand that your shop sells. Many excellent options. My personal choices would be a Baume Riviera or a Longines Zulu Time, with the former being my top choice. The PRX is a very nice watch, but has become too popular.

Good philosophy to "look your age" when you are out painting the town red, but there are certainly advantages to dressing up your age when you are in the workplace. :)

Or meeting your future spouse's parents. ;)

Yeah I am thinking about getting a Longines too. Maybe the Zulu Time, maybe the regular spirit. We’ll see on my financial situations in a few months.

Yeah I agree on that. I’m in my early 20s, don’t want to look old, but I need to look mature so I can sell to older customers as well.

Still too far for that haha

·

If your job provides a good discount then I would stick to whatever it is you have in hand, can't beat a great price

·

Buy what you like among the brands that your store carry. Or if they are fine with other brands outside from the brands.
