I’m getting distracted. Should I buy another Seiko?

Lads, I’m getting distracted. I thought I was being a good boy, staying away from Watch Forums, and being focused saving up for my Prospex SPB143J diver which I absolutely adore, then this watch rolls into my eyes.

Image

I always had a love hate relationship with the Style 60s line. I love the look of the watch, and it pains me they didn’t give this watch a higher specs and bump it to a Prospex line or watch. 4R movement, Hardlex Crystal (basically means nothing), and non rotating bezel? Come on Seiko, you could do better.

But here we have such a classic looking watch, 40.5mm in diameter, a FREAKING GMT, 12mm thick, and a display case back for all under $700 kangaroo dollars? It’s too big of a bargain to not consider.

Image

My beautiful SPB143J which may be my end game Seiko is only $1400, double the price, but a price I’m much willing to pay, but this is stealing my eyes way too much. The only thing which saddens me about the SPB143J is that it’s not a full black dial and it doesn’t come with a display caseback, if not it literally is the perfect watch.

What do I do??? Buy, or don’t buy? And if I do buy, what colour ahhhh!!!!!

Hold fast and wait!!

You can probably afford the 143 used, that's certainly the route I've taken - I paid £450 for the 147 (brown dial, gilt indices), £550 for my black Willard and £500 for my green Willard! Really don't see any value in buying used.

Get on eBay and be patient, you'll get one much sooner than waiting to save up for a new one !!

Good luck & happy hunting 🤞🏻🍀

Price isn’t the issue. I just don’t know which one to buy, I also checked a lot of SPB143J pre-owned, price difference is at most $150, my seiko dealer gives a big discount so I’m not paying full retail. With that being the case I’ll go new. Yeah it’s just more that I resonate with the looks of the style 60 and the specs of the SPB143J

·

Stay on course toward the end goal, don't spend your savings on cheapies along the way! 💪

Personal taste, I like the SPB143 a lot more.

Stay the course and ignore the distractions.

I really wanted to stick to my two watches max per brand, at this rate I’m gonna have 5 seikos 😂

  1. Alpinist was my first love

  2. SPB143J was supposed to be my last affair

  3. Now I’m looking at this Presage 60s GMT

  4. Because I really want the Grand Seiko SBGM221 but can’t afford it

  5. Till the day I can buy the Grand Seiko SLGA007 Lake Suwa (or the snowflake I like basic things too)

If you like the Style 60's then go for it! The 6r really aren't any better than the 4r's in my experience and I've yet to damage a Hardlex crystal in 30+ years!! 👍🏻

I don’t like the 6R either, my watch came out -2 minutes from the factory. After regulation it’s still varies around 20 seconds a day. It has a nice power reserve which is what I mainly appreciate about the movement.

·

I vote Green Alpinist... was there a vote? Oh, maybe me just blurting out things i like...

·

I did, but, but not many resonated with me.

·

Just a heads up, Seiko actually updated the SPB143 with the SPB453 with a full black dial, slightly more wearable case (smaller in every dimension overall) and better specs. I expect the new one to cost more than the SPB143 but I would save up for that if I were you (because I've been trying to get one myself).

·

Nice try, I already have an alpinist 😭

Why is your post reminds me of myself a couple of years ago 🤓😁

I did, I tried, I loved it. It’s out of my price range. At that price point, as much as I love Seiko, I would buy a Longines Spirit at 37mm which I’ve been staring at work for the past year. I do like bigger diver watches, function over looks kinda style.

·

Yes!

·

I'd go directly for the SPB143J, I ahree it is a beautiful watch.

After that you can come back for the other one. It will be easier next time since the cost is lower.

·

The Presage does look nice. But: only 50m WR no screw down crown. Specs-wise the 143 defecates all-day long on the SSK.

Don’t fall for the pretty face that will disappoint after a short honeymoon. (And yes, I’m talking about watches 😀)

·

Focus mate, stay the course! You know the SPB143 is the better watch but seems distracted by the white noise coming from the SSK. Don't get me wrong, the 60's GMT is nice but at that price point, the features are mehh. The GMT has an independently adjustable 24-hour hand, practical for tracking a time zone at home or the office but less user-friendly when travelling. See-through case back? An entry level automatic movement that's non-decorated and very utilitarian looking. I'm sure you know the rest.

While there is nothing groundbreaking in terms of design or wearability, SPB143 is a dive watch that ticks off every box there is to tick, no fuss, no frills. And of course more wallet-friendly pricing compared to their SLA cousins.

Good luck in your watch journey!

·

You can do it! 🗿

·

The newer SPB does have a full black dial! SPB453 to be exact.

·

Go to a shop, try them both and let your wrist do the talking. Own both (147 and the white 60s) , love both, they are completely different look but wears about the same.

Do you go to 200m or 2m max, today mostly just for looks. 60s has better details than the diver which is more of an icon as seiko first diver but the diver style was pioneered by blancpain.

·

Hold out for the spb143, that’s a very nice watch.

·

My SPB153, though a very beautiful watch, has a poor performing movement, 6R35. I would recommend that you don't pay anywhere near $1400. Second hand offerings may come from disappointed owners like me, but at least you won't be spending your money hastily.

@Luckyyy I love the grey dial, but I agree with @CampusZombie If you want the black go for the updated one. I personally have the 143 and love it. Buy the one you have been wanting longer. Even if you buy the ssk you'll still be longing for the diver...most likely.

PS

You can always have the SSK be your next goal. Good hunting

Just found this recently. Looks interesting just unfortunately I’m not in my home country. I’m willing to pay the $1400 cuz second hand market is just 100-200 cheaper at most, and this is Australian dollars not US, so it’s not as much as you think. I also plan to get it right before I fly off to Malaysia, so I can claim back on GST too.

If that’s your endgame watch than save up!!! Don’t get sidetracked and keep your eyes on the prize 👍🏻👍🏻

hahah Although I think they're quite different shades of blue, I vote white"!

Yo my dude I need help

Image

I went back to peak at the window and now the blue dial is screaming at me 😭

But now I’m in love with the grey dial again, I think seikos ads are just so bad that I forgot how nice it looks in real life.

Image

But the blue dial is also very nice. Couldn’t get a good shot of it, but yeah I tried that on and the size was a bit bigger than I expected, but I guess that’s because of the small bezel. For a sporty dress office watch I think it’s pretty decent, nice and legible, but right now I’m leaning towards the SPJ143 again, not sure which one, but one of them.

Funny notes: I walked in there trying out the watch, the lady in the seiko AD was interested in hiring me hahahaha, will see what kind of news I get from them.

Ahahha I know what you mean with the seiko ads, of alk these watches I love the SPB297 the most, it’s just sooo beautiful, the blue GMT is a close second 🔥

Yeah I agree. If they have a textured dial for the grey, easy sell. I may put a deposit for the blue dial and maybe buy it in a few months time. Will see.
