Quick background on me - I started a company 7 years ago with my business partner, built it up to a decent size, then sold it last year. I took some time off to do other things. Now I’m starting a company for fun. A brand of watch accessories with innovative designs of things I’ve always wanted in the marketplace but can’t find. Unique luxury straps, highly unique travel rolls, etc.
I also want the brand to celebrate the relationship between watches and rock n’ roll/old school metal. This will be reflected through imagery, marketing, etc. I feel as though most brands in the marketplace focus on the posh sophisticated side of watches, while absolutely important, I want to create a brand that has some more fun leaning into music history and the relationship to watches.
I have narrowed it down to these names. I want the name almost to sound like it also could have been a band name. Hence “Dominus”, Latin for “master of all” which sounds like an over the top oldschool metal band name. And “Nova” reminds me of 1960’s Chevy novas and the nostalgia that goes along with that.
If you have read this far, thanks for reading and I really appreciate your input!

I voted Nova, as it has three easy and interesting associations a) the classic car b) space, and c) new.
Dominus is too easy associated with domicile, dominos, and complicated associations with "master".
Sorry, but I hear "Nova" and my head immediately goes to:

Is nova a word for cream cheese and salmon on bagels?

Thanks for the input, very helpful 🙏

Nova lox. Google it.
Nova lox. Google it.
oh, that is hilarious, really glad you shared that. not a deal breaker but good to know. it says "named partly due to the salmon of nova scotia" 😂
I think Dominus is more in keeping with the music vibe. Nova sounds a bit lightweight, and generic.

Very helpful, thanks!
I voted Nova. Seems like from a branding perspective it would be logo friendly and easily remembered. Good luck on your venture!

I'm confused. "Nova" reminds you of a bagel?🤯

Google Nova Lox.
Neither works for me, though I doubt I'm your target customer. Dominus sounds like dominate, not good. Nova sounds like a crappy car which, for those of us who rode in them back in the day, before they became "classic", is what they were. Also, when Chevy decided to keep the name to sell them in Mexico, they didn't consult anyone who spoke Spanish and couldn't understand why they never sold there. "Nova" in Spanish means "no go"! 😂
Dominus is the Latin word for Master.
Nova was made in the UK by vauxhall.... Chevy nova it is not!
On the subject of Latin and wanting a name that calls out.....
Invocat is the Latin word which translates to English as 'calls out'
I’m an old rocker from the 60s and 70s…but I still have to ask what is the relationship between watches and rock-n-roll?
Believe me, I have tried not to spend hours on this but I keep coming back. I’ve been in position to name companies, my own and others. As you know, it’s not easy. I keep looking at your two finalists and unfortunately for me, just my opinion, both have too many weird connections. Nova the science show is great but the Chevy isn’t. Dominus brings to mind a Bond girl or cheap pizza. How about kind of a combination of both that means new in Latin and is a derivation of Nova, Novus. There is a rock band with that name. Don’t think there would be copywriter issues as your product and them aren’t even close.
Branding is tough! Which is why It’s so good to get all this feedback. I do agree with lots of the points you have made as have been some of my fears. I will circle back with some new names!
It doesn't matter what you call it as long as you use a heavy metal font and at least one umlaut ... preferably above a consonant.
Branding is everything, agreed! Sometimes it’s hard to choose a name with out the logo and imagery of what you’re trying to conveyZ
Nova is a lot more attractive and marketable. But in my opinion misses the core value of your brand and what it wants to represent. Nobody will get the Chevy Nova story from the get-go. My theory is that Nova gives more of a modern, futuristic vibe (what the Chevy Nova wanted to archive).
I think most people have their problem with Domius because they simply would not buy something from a brand called "Domius". It has more of a latin, churchy, vatican vibe to it. And it's really cheesy and kind of cheap.
I would highly recommend to try something else. Try not to make it too complicated.
Great feedback, totally agree with these points. Thanks!
What do you think about "Riff", "Amp" (<- the two are my favorites), "Vokz" or simply "Note" ?
If you want to make it more old school metal I could imagine "Volt" (another favorite), "Mosh" or "Roar".
Sure enough you can always make it more metal with an umlaut. "Ämp", "Völt".
Really like the volt idea! I will play around with some of these, thank you!
Maybe a Trench watch strap called Passchendaele, and a bund called Aces High?
Love that idea!
Why you don’t mix those together like: “Novanus” 🌚🌚🌚
Novanus… is that supposed to sound like anus 😂
"Thrash mods?"
Keep in mind that like Chevy, the Nova will not sell well in Mexico. “Nova” means “No go” in Spanish. 😅
🤣 "Nova" 🤣
That's a Vauxhall Nova to anyone this side of the pond. A budget starter car that's "Kev'd up " by the boy racers.
You really won't get taken seriously with that name, at least in the UK 🤣🤣🤣
Radio Nova is a dad rock channel in Ireland, so that fits.
Dominus brings up thoughts of monks and Monty Python. Maybe Domini or Magister of sticking to the Latin theme.
🤣 "Nova" 🤣

Noted 😂
I preferred the name "nova" as soon as I saw the other option. When you mentioned the connection with rock though, I started to think you really have something cool here. Specifically because Nova makes me think of a bright start in the sky and it's shine, which can be related to the rock starts we all love. So you could make awesome art assimilating the coolnes and out there personality of your brand to similarly personalities of rock. Right off the bat for some reason I thought of a bright and colorful image of David Bowie back in the day and the name nova for some reason. Neat idea! Hope it comes to fruition soon.
Nova is way better

These are great suggestions.
Neither name sounds very good. Why don't you do it the old way, giving the company your own name. Ray Watchbox, or something similar
