What's your opinion on affordable mecaquartz chronographs?

Do you have / have had in the past a mecaquartz chronograph in your collection?

Which brand do you own or rate the highest in terms of mecaquartz offerings?

I wanted to like them. I owned 2 (Dan Henry 1964 + Seiko Solar Speedtimer) but sold them both. Great value for money but just didn't feel right for me.

(also I get confused on what qualifies as "meca-quartz" so excuse me if my examples were just standard quartz)

I'm all for Quartz Chronographs on the affordable end of the spectrum.

You can dip your toes into Chronographs for much less, try it out, and if you really like this style of watch, upgrade to more expensive mechanical Chronos in future.

·

The only thing that really bothers me with meca-quartz is the presence of the useless 24Hr indicator.

I think mecaquartz are rhe ones with sweep second hand movement and instant fly back when reseted. This is given by the mechanical chronograph module on top of the quartz movement

Seiko really needs to fix this. They would sell a ton more movements if they did.

Absolutely right. In my case I've had some mechanical chronographs which I still own, but they're rather fragile so I rarely wear them which is a pity. That's why I kinda rediscovered the mecaquartz chronos for myself and really am enjoying then😊👍

Yep, not really useful on a day to day basis. Always wondered why they didn't put an hours totalizer there🙄

Very elegant

Love the looks of the Speedtimer, bought it as a gift. I think they are great and maybe even more desirable (for me) than mechanical ones.

·

I have two Dan Henry meca-quartz that I love ❤️. It’s a reliable and accurate movement

You can tell if large chronograph second hand moves smoothly like an automatic, while the small actual second hand ticks like a quartz. A pure quartz chronograph, both second hands will tick.

·

You can get the movements for around $20, and they have (so far) continued to work despite my modding abuses. I'm really waiting for parts availability to take off. This could be so much fun!

·

I love my meca-quartz chronos!

That's a fantastic trio!! The middle one is a true OG these days. Was considering the third one with the blue dial too, gorgeous watch 👊

·

I’m a big fan of both Brew Metric and Autodromo Prototipo. Some great well-finished pieces! Love me a meca-quartz.

That's because the chrono module has only power for an hour, but they could have used the sub-dial for something a bit more useful, like un slaving the hand and using it to track another time zone for example.

·

No way would I buy another chronograph with the useless 24hour sub dial. The Yema rallygraf was a good looking watch but had no running second hand which should have been where the 24 hour dial was.

That was a bicompax layout then?

My white dial brew is fantastic 😍 😊. It's a joy to wear. If timing is truly important, then you want the accuracy of quartz.

Great watches indeed 👍

This is my favourite one❤️

That's the brother to my ice blue one!👊🧊

I also love the features and the looks of this AT8040, but I can't seem to find any to try on nearby.

Edit: yeah, it's not mechaquartz, but even then, it has 0.05s accuracy and a 1/20s subdial at six o clock. Among other features.

Looks great!

The SSC911 of course

Yes it was. It looked great but why oh why have a 24 hour dial and no running seconds. Very much a style over substance watch.

Agreed. I'm ok with tricompax layout though

What is the reference of this third Seiko?

Third watch = Seiko SSB377P1

The first one isn't a Seiko, but rather a Pagani Design PD1701v3 "Speedmaster" homage ... it does however have a Seiko meca-quartz movement inside 😀

·

They work.

#brew made a nice chronograph with the Brew Metric using a Seiko mechaquartz mechanism.

Nicer appearance than just a quartz chronograph mechanism itself.

Absolutely. W

That sweep seconds hand looks way better than a ticking one

Citizen is also guilty of this abomination.
