Sunday musings: new GO or used Patek?

I know, i know - no more watches for me this year. But one can muse about what the future may bring, can’t one?

And whilst musing (and browsing the good ol’ internet) it struck me I now have two watches I would really, really like to own at some point in the not too distant future. And that I can’t have them both (at least not in same not too distant future). And the odd thing is, they are completely different watches, so I can’t do a spec by spec comparison. Here are the two contestants (they are similarly priced):

New Glashütte Original SeaQ (39.5mm, calibre 39.11 in stainless steel, 20 atm):

Used Patek Philippe Gondolo (30x37.5 mm in 18k white gold and rose dial, ref 5024, mid 90s, box and papers included):

I love them both! Won’t put up a poll, because it’s not a case of ‘most votes decide what Icarium will buy’ :-) And will depend anyhow on financial circumstances next year. But interested in hearing your thoughts and your preference. And perhaps you are faced with wanting two completely different watches as well (and you can only have one…)

My take is the Patek.

I have divers (though the green colorway is tempting).

I don't have a Tank-esque dress watch.

So it's the Patek.

Not enough information for me to choose.

If you have a watch box full of round divers watches; I’d pick the Patel.

If your collection has a majority dressy watches and no diver; I’d pick the GO.

Either could be be great depending upon what you already have.

Good luck choosing. 😂

I'm for a Patek 😎

·

I also say Patek. Well, the Patek shown, not some sport watch.

·

I saw the SeaQ a month or so ago. Great looking watch. If asking my wife she would say the Patek. She has a thing for watches that have corners.

·

Easy for me. Glashutte Original 🍻

Check. I have a couple of divers - but nowhere near the level of the GO. I do have some solid dress watches (among which one GO :)

Yup, it’d be the one in the picture

·

Both great watches. If it were me, I’d go with the Patek. Dive watches are a dime a dozen. Pateks ain’t.

In that case I would pick the Patek. Just because my opinion is, having a few divers watches, if any level, is enough.🫣

I would choose the GO. I am wearing my blue seaq now and it feels great. That's not taking anything away from the Patek but I don't like their take on rectangular watches.

I am also wrestling been two watches...Patek 6000 and Breguet 7027. Not sure how I am going to decide between the two.

Very different as well. I slightly lean towards the Breguet in that case.

I Have always been a fan of brand new. I want my name on the warranty card. Unless it was a gift or hand me down, all my watches have always been bought new. With that, i would go for the Glasshutte Originale. Plus, it also agrees more with my personal aesthetic taste and lifestyle.

No judgement if you do not personally share my taste though. There's the pricing advantage of buying second hand (unless for the brands that appreciate on the secondary market).

·

The VC needs a holy trinity member to keep it company. Patek all the way!

·

It would be the GO for me. While I don't really care what people think about the watch on my wrist. I buy them for me. I don't think I would be comfortable wearing a Patex new or old. But please buy what works for you. They are both amazing watches. I don't think you can go wrong either way. Good luck.

Patek

It might be a closer call if it was the panorama date with the open caseback. The fact that the model exists makes me a little biased towards Patek.

·

If you're cheap (like me), go for the SeaQ, because the movement might be cheaper to service between the two. If you want to have something different in your collection, I say go for the Patek. Classy and tasteful watch for a classy and tasteful guy, I say. 🍻

·

Patek. If I ever bought a Patek, I think that would be my exit watch.

·

Love mine! Congrats!!!

Patek of course.

Thanks y’all. Heard some compelling arguments - both ways :) Besides love for the brand, aesthetics and fit with rest of the collection the ‘used’ part of the Patek is definitely something to consider. And I know my GO AD charges about EUR 500 for the recommended service once every five years; don’t know what the Patek costs are. Still in a quandary :-) But I’m not in a hurry, and both GO and the Patek are sold locally (one at 30, other at about 45 minutes drive), so next step is trying them both on IRL. And last night there was talk about remodeling the kitchen - so may have to postpone the whole affair to a later date anyway 😂 I’ll keep juggling the two in my head in the meantime and post the pics of the two when I get around to trying them on.

I agree! Would much rather have the pano date. But that version is 43.2 mm, and my ‘limit’ is 42 mm.

I have no opinion but I request that you keep us informed 🙏🏻😊

The Grand Seiko Tentagraph was created at 43.2 mm. I think they want people to know it’s there. With Patek you will find yourself doing the “this old thing, its a Patek” once in a blue moon.

Have you looked up servicing cost on the patek?

Just Googled it...Would mean max 900 CHF every five years or so - if I were to follow that recommended regime:

PS: also just read that: 'A manually wound watch should preferably be wound every morning'....oops....
