Am I wrong to like this Hublot?

I was browsing a magazine today and came across a picture of this watch. That’s nice I thought to myself. Then I found out it was a Hublot. Now I’ve never understood the hate this brand attracts, but I’ve never personally been attracted to any Hublot design I’ve seen. I know very little of them from a horological point of view, but have always believed them to be very overpriced, even getting over the aesthetics. However, this Hublot Classic Fusion Ceramic Chronograph looks fantastic. I can’t speak to its intrinsic value, but I love its looks. Thoughts people?

Well…it’s black

You are doing this wrong. Watch nerds don't like watches that look good. They value silly stories, technical claims, and other things that have no bearing on their enjoyment of a watch. If you wish to be a normal person, you are free to like Hublot, but if you start realizing how ugly many esteemed watches are, you may be in danger.

·

That's a great looking watch.

A lot of people bash Hublot because it's a way to establish that they are part of the "in-group" in watch enthusiasm.

·

You are not wrong. Granted they have over the top designs on models, but everyone does. The classic port hole designs are really well done.

·

I don’t have a bias again Hublot. All I remember is scoreboards with the brand name. I find the rivets on the bezel unappealing.

·

You like what you like. Period.

·

I like it. I just think they are way too overpriced

·

Nothing wrong with that 😊 What is the size?

·

IMHO, a Tudor Black Bay Ceramic would be a better buy! Just my 2 cents. 🤷🏽‍♂️🤭 BTW, I almost bought a Hublot once, phew! No regrets here. 😅

·

I find their designs attractive, but due to the way they are constructed, finished and the movements that they choose to use(there are some exceptions) I can't personally justify the price. Even on the secondary market they still seem too much for where I would put my money. My background is in industrial design so I have that filter in terms of cost of manufacturing, etc...But in the end it's your money and your choice. No Judgment here!

·

I don't think most people have problem with Hublot designs (design is personal preference). I share opinion Hublot is greatly overpriced. True, any high-end watch is overpriced to some extent, but at least they would have proper in-house movements, exceptional finishing and watchmaking techniques, heritage, limited editions, etc. that might justify price. From my perspective, Hublot is using Sellita movements with minor finishing and markets it as in-house, no heritage. This specific watch (if not mistaken) retails at 11.8K USD in 42mm case...

I would rather opt for new TAG Carrera Chronograph released this year that retails for 6.4K USD. Yes - TAG has it's own issues, but at least I don't have feeling of being robbed.

·

I love it! If I had the cash, I'd be all over it like a fat bird over the last saveloy in a chip shop.

·

It actually looks pretty good, I had this on my wrist at the store. I don't like the movement but that's probably a me issue and not a movement issue.

·

I got a chance to handle a Hublot Classic Fusion Chronograph Titanium in person some time ago. I never liked the brand and that hasn't changed much. I certainly don't hate them. In my review here I gave my thoughts on it. I quite like their designs and that ceramic really complements the "dark" look.

Most people just bash Hublot for the sake of bashing, that's all there is to it.

No one is ever "wrong" for liking what they like, but I'm too much of a pragmatist to spend that kind of money on a brand that a lot of people don't like. Poor resale value. Bad investment. There are much cheaper watches in the same style, that won't sell you down the river. I personally own the one pictured, which I think is a lot cooler, and it also only costs $330, unlike the Hublot which is inexplicably $13,800. If someone handed me $14,000 right now, I would buy a $300 watch, and spend the rest on a down payment for an acre of wooded land, and give it to my son when he's old enough.

I have this doctor friend i'd like you to meet. He has this cool coat he gives to all his special friends.

·

You're about as wrong as anyone who liked a watch.....any watch.

·

If you like it, you like it. I think it could lose four of those screw heads, or whatever they're supposed to be. Looks a little over-cooked in that department. But again, if you like it... buy it.

·

No. It's not a bad looking watch, but they are insane to ask that much for it

·

Ok. Many thanks to all who commented. Pretty much aligns with my own thoughts. Nice looking watch, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder of course. Overpriced for the quality of movement and materials, even taking into account the brand recognition - or especially because of the brand recognition. At the end of the day, there are many other watches I’d spend that budget on (if I had it) before this Hublot. Thanks again people. 😁

·

I don't hate the brand but you can certainly find similar watches for far less

·

It’s the only nice hublot..

·

Pretty sure this hobby is almost entirely subjective mah man

·

I wont care about the price if i really like.

Good one.

Another one is "value for money". Basically means it's not within my budget I can comfortably spend and not regret, which in turn means I will have to stay hungry for a [x] months.

That's why most common watch enthusiast liked brands are on the cheaper end like Seikos, Citizens. You get a lot of options and they don't cost you a kidney. Occasionally going into Tudor because they can't get a rolex. Rolex is another one where enthusiasts can justify the cost because of the resale value, if they can afford the initial down-payment (but let's be honest there are plenty other brands that make a better looking watch with better movements but lose value quick).

At the end of the day, buying a watch worth more than 1k or even 500 is not value for money (except rolex given resale). Use your phone, it provides a more accurate time anyway +0/-0 year!) and has other multifunctions.

We buy watches for aesthetics (yes, it's just a braclet with a old school clock function) and sentimental value. Fun hobby that we don't want to break the bank. We will accept an ugly looking watch and justify to ourselves why it's value for money (e.g. Water resistance, lume, "strap monster", etc). None of these terms are used by normal people or the super rich buying expensive watches.

At my 20’s I was mad in love with Hublot, also I didn’t understand anything about watches costs and value, it was merely the looks. Now 10ish years later, I would never pay for one, regardless I find some models appealing.

Yep. I find my tastes have changed and refined over the years too.

If you like it, you like it. Forget the crowdsourced hate.
