How Long Can You Go Before Buying a New Watch!?

So full disclosure, I justify buying/trading for approximately 2 new watches per month because I have a YouTube channel (and need content). But that seems excessive to me and to many watch enthusiasts I know.

For this year (2022), I'm wondering if people have made predictions or have a plan for how many watches they plan to purchase? It's not always a rational decisions when buying a watch I know, but please tell me I'm not alone with the volume of new timepieces I cycle through...

Thanks :)

According to my wife, not nearly long enough! 😂 Seriously, I don't seem to be able to go more than about two or three months without buying a watch, and I probably average about 6-7 per year. I do make a list at the beginning of the year with the watches I am interested in acquiring that year, but I usually don't stick to it and watches get added and fall off throughout the year. 😀

I am currently in the process of making my list for this year, and I have two items definitely on it; the Axios Flagship and the Phoibos Nebula. Another watch I am considering adding to the list is the Geckota Airstream Gen 2. All of these have the new third party movement that seems to be the belle of the ball currently, the Miyota 9000 series, and I am aparently just as infatuated with it as a lot of other people. 😂 I already have an Islander with a 9000 series movement that I really like.

I buy more than the average person and own way more watches than I need. I started early in life and having a couple of watches turned into an accumulation that baffles people that I know who only have one or two.

I do sell on occasion but never enough to noticeably lighten the load.

With all that being said I never came close to your numbers.

I don't really watch many YT channels, pretty much just a forum guy, but do you make money from YT? If so could it be classified as a business expense?

Honestly no idea really.Altho im not yet in a position where i can comfortably buy watches like some of you do.The more money i have the more comfortable i am,i do not have a job yet so i do not have a fixed amount of money yet. Also i live in Serbia where money doesnt work like say in the US.Like a 100€ is a lotta money here compared to there.(when looking at an average citizen)

My latest philosophy is one new watch per year, unless another leaves the collection. The benefit of holding to that discipline I have found is that I end up feeling better about spending a little more on a quality piece and do way more research and thinking before pulling the trigger. I may have to switch to one in one out in a few years too as the collection grows too large.

This is a big part of the reason why I started my channel... It's the perfect excuse to HAVE to get more watches. At least that's what I keep telling my fiancee 😜

·

this is maybe it’s own discussion- I’m curious as to what constitutes “enough” such that we feel guilt and need to get rid of one.   finances can play a role for sure, but I’m thinking more the psychological line we draw.   Happily I’m at only at 3 ‘nice’ watches so I’m getting some more, yippee! 😃

Dont pay attention nor recording when i last bought a watch (new or pre-owned), if i had the money and that piece do speak to me, i ll buy it.

People can buy things and find a gazillion number of reasons to rationalise the action 😅

I'd like to start by saying that I enjoy your YouTube channel.

In the 3 years that I've been collecting, I've never gone more than 3 months between watches, and have averaged about one per month. I've never sold any, and don't have any plans on doing so. There are still several watches on my wish list, but I don't anticipate my collection continuing to grow at the same pace.

Since I've been really into watches, the longest I've gone is 6 months.  My goal for this year in one big move ($4-8k) and possibly one affordable purchase (less than $1k)

My ultimate goal is to stop wanting to buy more watches.

Great idea making a list for this year. I like your taste :)

Thanks for your feedback. While my channel (Everyday Watch Guy) is monetized on YouTube, it's far from paying for my watch addiction haha. I work full time anyways so I don't think I can write off buying watches as an expense, thought that's the dream :)

Greetings from Canada! I hope you can land a great job and start expanding into buying more watches, when you are comfortable doing so.

I use to buy a lot of lower / moderately priced watches eg Hamiltons, Seikos, C-Wards, Casios etc… about 1 per month on average, then it moved to 1 every 6+ months when I went up market ie Tudor, but after two big Rolex buys I’ve stopped buying. Still very much into the hobby, but getting a watch I love / wear daily (Explorer 214270 MKII), and frankly I overpaid for has taken some of the edge off. I still am on the hunt (looking for a Bruce Wayne) but happy to do that at a more reasonable pace.

·

I haven't bought one all year :) ;)

·

I buy one watch each calendar year. I don't like selling watches, and I also get stressed at the idea of a larger collection... but I do enjoy doing lots of research and savoring the hunt, so I take it nice and slow.

·

I generally get one big watch purchase every 2 years.  This year I will likely get a GS and a casioak.

Maybe I should consider a YouTube channel to convince my wife it is part of the job 😅

Great logic :)

·

No rationalization...I've given up to trying to justify. At the present time, I've accumulated enough that I'm consolidating the collection and reusing the funds for new pieces...or at least that's what I'm telling myself. I see a new watch every month if not more frequently.  At present, I have 3 watches on order. Two kickstarters and one anOrdain. Two of the three are for my wife who has built up a sizable collection of her own.

·

It mostly depends on how compelling the piece is rather than how much time has passed. If there is nothing compelling, I acquire nothing.
