1976 Omega Seamaster

Hi all. I was just wondering how much do vintage 1976 Omega Seamasters usually go for today? Saw this listing from an IG reseller, he has it for roughly around $1,140 converted from my local currency. It’s basically mint condition, you guys can swipe through to the end for the watch’s description from the listing. I also want to know if it’s legit as I’m not too familiar with vintage Omega. If everything checks out I’m considering buying it from the guy. Thanks!!

That movement is so clean looking for its age it sounds alarm bells in my head. There has to have been some serious work done on it, the brushed finishing is perfect. I'd be wanting a lot more information as to it's history as I would doubt it's all original. More likely some of the parts are new/old stock.

The bottom of the dial has two Ts either side of the Swiss Made lettering. This suggests that Tritium has been used on the dial. I'm not sure if they were still using Tritium in the middle to late 70s but a more knowledgeable person than me will confirm.

It also says it's unpolished. It is unpolished in terms of a high polish finish but the watch is completely brushed & looks absolutely perfect. Someone has brush finished the watch recently for it to look as good as it does.

Looks real, it's either NOS or been rebuilt.

Pricey for a iffy one, but about right if it's a good one. You really need to find out more details.

Nice looking watch,I'd be tempted, good luck 🤞🏻

It's absolutely gorgeous & I agree everything looks right other than the Tritium issue which has me wondering 🙄

Yup, that movement was also my biggest concern as its too clean looking for its age. Either it’s not legit or as you said there’s been some serious work done on it

Yup, looks great but the tritium issue and the movement looking brand new has me concerned. I’ll try to dig some more into it

Interested to see what you guys finally decide regarding this one.

I wonder if a movement was fitted into a case which was a pretty common practice by sellers when I collected vintage back in the 80s, there are a lot of watchmakers who are very familiar with Omega but I suppose the problem is that you have to be the next owner before finding out its authenticity.

·

You can do a google search on the reference number, 166.0206 and see watches that look exactly like this including the Swiss and tritium designation. Browse around some of those and compare. The only thing I would say is to research the movement caliber a bit more. I have read negative comments about the 1000 series movements but do not remember the specifics.

Trutium is the stuff in the tubes, right?

I think you're thinking of radium, which was banned in 1968

Yes, you are correct, I'm confusing Tritium with Radium. Too much useless nonsense stored in the darker recesses of my brain. Tritium is used for lume & has a half life of around 12 years. It's the half life baloney that is responsible for my Abe Simpson moment.

It looks perfectly fine, at first I thought it was iffy that there are no lume pips at 12,6 and 9. Having checked it shouldn't have.

I don't know the specifics of buying off ig. But I wouldn't buy it unless there is some sort of buyer protection and seller rating system. How do you know the watch in photos, will be the watch you get.

·

If you're not familiar with the model I personally wouldn't drop $1,000+ on an instagram sale. Too many X factors for me. Cool watch though.

·

Is this on carousell? looks to good to be true tbh. And especially the movement is definitely cleaned.

Most watch brands replaced Radium with Tritium around 1963 & continued to use it until 1999 or there abouts. Radium was banned in 1968.

Thank you. Never too old to learn. 👍

You're welcome 👍

There are some concerns like the "tritium" issue. Some of the lume dots are misaligned and the lume dot at the 12 o'clock position is missing completely. I would be cautious.

I didn’t get it, the watch and movement just looks too clean and polished for it to be vintage
