Need inspiration for a tank like watch!

Seen some posts on WC and gone down a rabbit hole of tanks, reverso, and other rectangular watches but not finding much meets my criteria. So I am turning to the WC group (seeing as you started me off on this mad hunt), can you show me your tank like watches, looking for light coloured dials with Arabic numerals, preferably applied!

Love the idea of a smaller dressy watch with a casual brown strap for work and casual use.

Love JLC and always wanted a reverso but that is way beyond my budget, like the Rotary Cambridge (cannot seem to add a picture of that), but would prefer solar or automatic movement.

Otherwise let's see your none round watches as I don't feel they get as much love as they should!

  • Nomos Tetra has a lot of options esp. if you like a pop of color. ~ as low as 1.5k used

  • Fears has a throwback to one of their original designs ~ 4k

  • It's unclear what your budget is, but some of the Cartier Roadsters are often far less expensive. The Las Vegas/Roulette version is quite handsome ~ anywhere from 3 to 5k used

  • Credor has a couple of tonneau shaped watches for not a whole lot (under 2k used)

  • Omega put out a short lived De Ville jump hour in white/gold and a salmon/steel in the late 90s that is typically under 5k

  • Oris, Frederique Constant, and Tissot all have square or rectangular watches that you can find used under 2k or so

Does it have to be new? I am not a huge fan of vintage stuff but in this instance you can probably pick up older stuff for super cheap. If you are patient you might find rectangular, virtually unworn gold Omegas for not much more than their weight in gold. And they are small and light 😉

Thank you for all your suggestions and images! I am probably look at the budget end of those scales and do have a couple of Tissot so alway happy to add to that collection!

And I do like Oris too with a small big crown pointer in the collection.

Going to Google some of those and go further down the rabbit hole! First up that Omega sounds interesting!

To be honest I don't have a gold watch in my collection and the idea of a nice good condition one with a new rich brown strap does sound fun!

And if the heart wants what the heart wants there are def used Reversos for around 5k if you really hunt for them . . . single face (no duoface) and obviously can't be picky at that price point for much else. But these prices do exist!

Vario Versa

I had seen the Vario, looks like an interesting take on the reverso approach just looks a little like a cuff buster given its size.

Would love to hear from someone with one

None round like this one?

I like it a lot, in fact - everybody likes it a lot. It's a square G, what's not to like there?

The watch is 12mm thick so it’s on the edge of cuff busting. I think the 26mm width helps the issue though. Big issue in the fine print is this Watch can’t fit wrists bigger than 7.5”.

Orient how did I forget them!

LIP has the very affordable Churchill range. I have a T18 and have been very happy with it. Because of the tiny seconds hand I don’t mind that it’s Quartz. They make a larger auto version, as well though.

Unwanted vintage gold watches can be found in phenomenal condition... unless you want a specific model it only takes a bit of patience. Once it gets hyped that's the first stuff that vanishes from the market but odd shape small gold dress watches is a far off the hype road as it could be.

The ones with gold dials often haven't corroded too badly and the watches were often "too nice" to be worn yet can't be sold for sh*t, which is great if you're buying.

Been in your exact position before, Bulova make a good one

Here are some that I’ve owned. The Bulova and Seiko have moved on, but I still love my Cambridge:

I thought I wanted an automatic as well, but unless you spend $$ they’re really thick. For an occasional wear piece like this, I’m super happy with a no-seconds quartz.

Does the Rotary comes with a mechanical movement?

Does the Rotary comes with a mechanical movement?

No, it’s just a quartz. But I think it’s a great application, as it’s super slim and it’s hour and minute only, so there’s no ticking second hand.

The tuning fork logo on a mechanical watch is just a travesty.

Thanks! It really does change the character of the watch. To be honest, it was a pretty dirt cheap strap from Amazon, that I thought looked a bit like the tweed straps Casa Fagliano did for JLC.

I thought that when I saw your photo.

Normally I avoid quartz watches with all the collector bias towards them, apart from solar or the high end stuff like Grand Seiko, but I am coming round to the realisation that a large collection means having some lovely quartz watches to grab and go makes sense.

A pleasant value proposition , if I may.

It's a lovely dial and I have seen there are plenty of colour choices on places like ebay.

Wear it in good health

Not cheap but valuable - I like the 'Baume & Mercier Hampton 10522'. Arabic numerals (okay, only two) but applied!

Image

Not many applied Arabic watches come up in the hunt, that's a lovely one!

Eterna Les Historiques 1935 would be a nice choice,if you can find one.

I went for the Fears 1930 Archival, and I love it on, still waiting to wear it out as it’s for my wedding later this year!

I do like the Fears one, but possibly outside my budget.

Lovely time only choice for a wedding, all the best and enjoy the day when it comes!

A couple of watches I've been eyeing: The Bulova Sinatra "My Way"

and the Lorier Zephyr (but it probably doesn't meet your criteria)
