First watch! What's the right age?

Hi folks,

So I'm thinking about getting a pair of first watches for my niece & nephew.

They're 3.5 and 5.5 years old & neither have an analogy watch yet!

This Christmas strikes me as a perfect opportunity to get them something which will help them learn & develop... & just maybe, light the same spark I'm sure many of us remember from our youth when first discovering how cool watches are!

So, my question to the Crunch, does anyone have experience with the Timex Time Machine watches? Any good? Any other recommendations out there?

Thanks!

I went to Swatch and looked into Flik Flak and a lot of their more playful designs for a 6 year old, but ended up with a Parchie. A month after I gave it to the 6 year old, I find out they played with the watch in a sink and it no longer works 😭.

I have no experience with the Timex Time Machine, but I can tell you, my 2yr old nephew loves the BB58 🥳🥳🥳

Great idea. Here is a review from Time and Tide

My 3yo has this...

He loves airplanes but I have been able to start to teach him how to tell the time with it

My six year old son really likes his blue dialed Titanium Gul watch my 3 year old daughter really likes colour other than that she doesn’t really care.

I’d say you might be able to get the five and a half year old into a watch if you can find the right gimmick, which for my son was telling him that titanium is lighter and stronger than steel and like most boys he likes the idea of having something very strong. Because of this I’ve got him into watches and telling the time. The 3 year old will probably want a watch because the older sibling got one but it can be a little difficult to hold their attention enough to get them into watches, so colour would be the way I’d go there.

I have no experience with them but Blok watches https://blokwatches.com/ might be worth checking out. Looks nice with a good build quality. The flik flak and the timex you showed aren't really kidproof. Will not say that they can't kill the Blok but at least it has a chance

Get one that has some wr as it will go in the water. This has 100m wr and has a light, I got this blue for my son and a purple for my daughter. Oh and get some poly watch to buff out the scratches.

Nooo! Sorry to hear about the Parchie Tommy! I really like the look of those. Did you see the collab they did with Hodinkee a few months ago? Was tempted to get one for myself 😅 I really like the flikflak ranges from swatch - a strong contender!

These look fun! It might tick loud like a lot of Timex in the affordable categories. What about a Casio F91w?

Amazing! Start them early! They'll develop some mighty fine (and possibly expensive) taste with that influence 😄

To which I would suggest: Tom, have you thought about making a "tough" kid's watch, and letting your kiddos be the alpha testers? Why go elsewhere, when you can design something really nice, in-house?

Absolutely love this idea Christopher! Maybe once of these days!

Well, just make sure that whatever you give to kiddos that young is cheap enough to replace at the drop of a hat, or tough enough to handle the abuse! 🤣

Depends on the kid. I've gotten my 3 oldest watches (7,5,3) and they've worn them sporadically but they aren't interested enough. I know other kids are different but this is my experience

I got my son one of these timex watches last Christmas. He had turned 4 in November. Main reason for buying him one was to just get him familiar with the layout of a watch and nothing more than that. He was so excited when he got it and wore it all day with his sleeve on that arm rolled up saying "daddy ask me what time it is... It's ten minutes" very cute. Needless to say that lasted about 3 days and he's barely worn it since 😅. But for the price I don't care, and when he's ready it's there for him.

He does have a toy clock where you can take all the numbers out and put them back. I'm very proud that, with all the numbers removed, he can put any random number in the right place. So he's ahead of most kids, and some adults 😉

When they're ready I'll get my kids a bloc watch. They are very clever and designed to help teach an understanding of time. (and pretty cool so if they don't like them I'll just keep them!)

YES!! The red text was definitely catching my eye!

I got my first watch at 5, for what it’s worth. Wise to get children learning to read the time early. You might think I’m daft, but I think that that one small thing helps the mind develop several skills: awareness of geometry, simple mathematical notions of whole and divided units, memory and attention.

Remember that watches are an addiction. Giving a watch to young children is like giving them a cigarette 🚬😅.
