Just…Wow!

Visited the OAK collection at the Design Museum today.

Beautiful watches in beautiful condition.

Once the gravity of seeing these unique pieces had sunk in, I couldn’t even comprehend how Mr. Getreide (the owner of the collection) had even set about assembling these pieces. Sure (if you had the money) you could begin buying up all the ‘best’ watches in the world but he did it BEFORE they were considered ‘special’.

Before anyone asks: the standout for me was the Patek ref 570 with pink dial and pink gold case….

Apologies for the quality of some of the photos but lighting was not for photographic purposes!

When was the collection assembled, mostly? Thanks for sharing your experience.

The best part of the last 4 decades (he says he’s nowhere near finished). This is only part of his overall collection - the unique pieces.
All four series of the 2499 and a 1518 were there. Walking round and listening to some of the conversations was really cool

Wow. Thank you for sharing. Such beautiful pictures.

Nice pics. poor light there and the flash reflection would have killed the picture.

·

Wow, that is awesome!  Thanks for sharing.  Been watching videos of this collection on YouTube, they are amazing!  What an amazing passion and dedication he had to have to create this.

I went to see this on Friday - it was amazing! Really great to have had the chance to see these, some truly incredible pieces that I can be sure I'll never see again haha.

Awesome wasn’t it?

Know what you mean about never seeing them again.

Did you have a favourite?

Not really a favourite, but I was impressed to see the green dial diamond bezel Nautilus. I know there were rarer watches that are technically more interesting - but I expected to see those, and don't personally know that much about them. That one caught my eye especially as I know about it's story in more detail, and know it particularly to be one I wont see again!

I was hoping to go but then got covid, can’t risk giving it to fellow enthusiast. Thank you for sharing this. It’s a truly wonderful  collection. The nature of watch collecting means too many beautiful watches are in vaults and aren’t seen. I would love it if more private collections were displayed on loan to museums so that more people could enjoy them. Highly unlikely to become common place but this is a fine example of how it can work.

I hope you are feeling better and it didn’t cause you too much discomfort.

That’s a great idea (the collectors wouldn’t even have to be mentioned or named) but I can understand their reluctance due to value and privacy. It would be heartbreaking if anything bad happened. Certain pieces in their collections would be irreplaceable

Nice!

It felt really special seeing it - we don’t have to own it to appreciate it. Did you go too?

Funny you mention the MR01…mine’s scheduled for a July delivery 🤞

Oh nice one! Yep, Salmon dial for me too (although I do sometimes wonder if I should have gone for the silver). Looking forward to it. Let’s hope there’s no QC issues with ours!
