MoonSwatch vs Certina DS Podium

So I was just watching the recent HODINKEE video on the MoonSwatch and it made me think about a watch I have in my collection.

The MoonSwatch is $260 has the cool looks of the classic Speedmaster but is essentially a plastic watch with a really basic quartz chronograph movement and a kinda crappy uncomfortable velcro strap. It's case size of 42mm and thickness of 13.25mm and 30M of water resistance.

On the other hand, the Certina DS Podium Precidrive Chronograph GMT for $189 has a high quality ETA G10.961 quartz GMT chronograph movement and is made from green PVD aluminum with a cool super comfortable rubber strap. It's case size of 42mm and thickness of 13mm and 100M of water resistance.

In comparing the two, on cool factor I'd give a slight edge to the MoonSwatch - can't beat the classic look of the Speedmaster. On everything else, the Certina blows the MoonSwatch out of the universe.

So why would you spend $260 for effectively a "toy" watch when for $189 you can have a fully functional chronograph with full GMT capability, date complication and a real chronograph function?

Logic tells me the Certina should win every time, but my guess is that emotion and hype is sending everyone to the MoonSwatch.

What are your thoughts?

But a $55 CAD Timex Expedition does what your $189 USD Certina does, and has an alarm as well as a second timezone.

Logically you are wasting money buying the Certina or MoonSwatch.... Which is why logic is a poor way to buy watches.

Touche!

My personal failing - I cannot stand digital dials. It has to be an analog dial for me - even my Casio G-Shock is an MT-G with analog dial. I also have the Casio Duro - again an analog dial.

Timex and Casio make fantastic watches at amazing value for money prices.

I also forgot to mention another important feature of the Certina - sapphire crystal versus the immediately scratchable cheap plastic crystal of the MoonSwatch.

Big fan of Certina, my grandmother used to own one. I would probably own one at some point of my journey.

Certina all the way!

Ciao ciao Moonplastic 👋🏻

Not gonna lie...  I'm getting the MoonSwatch!!!  Jupiter cause it's got Speedy Ultraman vibes.  And, of course, Uranus...

I'm hoping to eventually buy a Pluto, partly because I like the colours, and partly because Pluto is a planet!

Also, I will be looking for Uranus... because like any self respecting middle aged man I can't resist the jokes. 🤣

I'll be honest...like Mr. Wonderful (in his recent video with Teddy B)...I want them all and the presentation box.

Not because I want to wear them, but I'm a watch collector...'nuff said.

YES!

·

Here's some logic: My grail is a real Speedy and I want the baby of the daddy. Also, I don't really have green in my wardrobe so... Cool wins in this case. Shrug

I want the Mars Moonswatch, but I know what will happen. I’ll open the box and think “wow cool!” And I will put it on, and after an hour I’ll think “this is like an Omega, but shittier,” and then I’ll put on a different watch and never wear the Moonswatch again.

tl;dr: I feel like Moonswatch is the watch equivalent of a “pull my finger” t-shirt.

I wonder if the bioceramic will decompose over time - will we need to keep it out of direct sunlight, will it shrink, what exactly is the composition? How will it react to body temperature or body oils?

I've seen videos where the red from the Mission To Mars MoonSwatch has rubbed off on the wearers skin - really surprising - how is that OK?

So I have to add some information to this listing as the irony is just too much...

So with everyone paying four figures for the $260 MoonSwatches, I thought I would write a post about a really excellent alternative produced by Certina that just a few months ago were selling for between $185-$210 depending on which grey market dealer you picked them up from (mine came from Jomashop).

After posting this thread, I went out to see if I could find a few links for anyone on the thread who might want to purchase one, only to find out...

These are apparently all sold out and are now selling for anywhere from $800 to $2,400 on the secondary market. The least expensive one I found was at a Jordanian dealer's web site where it was being offered for around $400.

So I guess it's not just MoonSwatches that are selling for stupid prices...

i Don’t think anyone is buying the moonswatch for its performance. It’s cheap and a bit of fun with its relation to the real deal moonwatch. As a result , it’s not a matter of pointing out the better performance of similar priced watches. If someone wanted performance they would go elsewhere….. this is about a bit of fun

·

I would be curious to know how equivalent those movements are, being they are made by the same company.

On a personal note, I would take the Certina all day long. Cool looking watch! In fact, I might see about acquiring one :)

I got this new  a week before the Swatch /Omega roll out for $60.00 CAD from Jomashop. Same movement on rubber not crappy velcro

Totally get it...I'm guilty as well - I want them all. Just thought it would be fun to point out our collective psychosis when its comes to MoonSwatches...maybe its a tidal thing 😀

Apparently, the Moon Swatch has an ETA G10.211 or G10.212. Here is the source for that info:

https://calibercorner.com/swatch-moonswatch-movement/#:~:text=The%20MoonSwatch%20is%20a%20product,the%20MoonSwatch%20is%20an%20ETA

The replacement cost for the ETA G10.211 movement is $65.

The Certina uses the more complex ETA G10.961 which has a replacement cost of $85.

So not that much difference overall. Both are very commonly used ETA quartz chronograph movements.

This cost me £20. It looks like a G-Shock, tracks 5 timezones, has alarm, stopwatch, timer, and tells when it’s a good time to fish. I need none of those functions.

This cost me £8

I quite like that Certina, but I wouldn’t wear it. You are correct, it seems like a much better option.

·

Wasn't aware of this Certina - it looks interesting.  How can you replace the band, if needed?
EDIT:

Men's DS Podium Aluminum Chronograph Rubber Black Dial Watch

Not really available, though...

That just looks like a standard spring bar and you can get rubber bands to suit that shape.

Yes. But it seems to be out of stock everywhere. :)

·

The moonswatch is just total hype. But even without the madness behind it, after reading reviews and seeing videos, 260 is really pushing it for what it is. Is it cool? Yeah, kinda, but the great watches you can get for $300 budget is amazing.

I really like that casio, "fish-moon" fantastic

·

Sorry! I meant that the watch is not available

·

If you want a watch that is like a Moonwatch but cheaper, and not as crappy as a Moonswatch, go for Corgeut's homage to the real thing.

·

or buy a fake copy from DHgate of the omega/swatch. Heck the metal speedmaster homage is cheaper

Great question - I never thought about replacing the band.

I use it as my main travel watch as it fits all the criteria I need for travel: 1) Super comfortable, 2) Super light on the wrist, 3) GMT function for that extra time zone, 4) Reliable quartz so no need to worry about winding/etc. - ready to go always, 5) Inexpensive and durable, 6) I don't worry about needing to put it in a safe when in the hotel, and, most importantly, 7) No one wants to steal it - so no worries about getting bonked over the head for it.

My nice watches sit safely inside my watch roll in my hand luggage.

Sadly you are correct that availability is now very limited - it looks like these were cleared out in the last round of discounted sales.

There’s that too. The whole thing is brilliant from a marketing standpoint, but at the end of the day it just seems like an overpriced cheap watch with the Omega logo on it.
