A psychologically rigged poll

Which one would you pick? If you can't choose, comment what else would you choose! If you do choose, comment why you chose it!

It's not entirely baseless, I'm planning to get a diver one day, and my preferences are slowly crystalising. Sadly, just like with the everyday watch, none fit my preferences perfectly.

I own a Lorier and had my eye on the Neptune for a while. In addition, where there is a choice, I like a no date. The Neptune’s date is the least conspicuous of the lot.

·

And this is interesting. :) While like a date on any design that looks good with one, I don't prefer the date to be inconspicuous, but integrated. The Nodate crowd (sounds Japanese, doesn't it?) will undoubtedly sway this...

Seiko!

Orient are a sub brand of Seiko/Epson & pitched below them.

The Lorier is a homage microbrand, will tank in value and be harder to sell in the future.

I paid £500 for my green Willard, £550 for my 62Mas Prospex reissue, both lightly used from eBay.

Buy used & aim higher would be my two penneth worth. 👍🏻

A valid tactic, but I take divers as sort of semi-beaters, so lower purchase price is necessary. Buying Orients and Loriers second-hand would be more economical still than high-end Seiko divers.

Resale value isn't that important, because I plan to keep it.

And as fas as designs go, I'm not a fan of Seiko's retro designs. Their contemporary ones are nice, but rather butch, and I still fancy the subtle 1960's swiss retro more.

This is a great daily driver. 38mm with sapphire. It's a solar and can be found for under $400 new. There's a very cool black dial with a gray bezel that's a JDM model that can also be found for under $400 on eBay.

Orient Kamasu is one of the best pound for pound diver for the money IMO, and the turquoise is a stunning dial on wrist. Red is also great, but turquoise is manufique!!

·

Ah, I've considered a true tool solar option too - Citizen Promaster 37 mm.

If I already didn't have one blue and one green watch, turquoise would be my choice among the Kamasus. But I do and I'd also like to diversify the colours, hence the dilemma. 😀

While I hear good things about Orient, their designs feel ultra-generic to me while Lorier are doing that mid-century, low-key, dress diver things that works for me personally. If I have to pick one thing: I prefer a dive bezel with subtle knurling. Keep that to yourselves, please. Some of my best friends don't know about my dive bezel knurling preferences.

·

Lorier. Honestly the name “Orient” is super off-putting for some reason. Japan seems synonymous with quality watches, but “Orient” makes me think of discount products from China and Southeast Asian countries. Totally unfair I know, but it is what it is. Someday I will get one and eat my words probably.

Hey, I thought that too when I first read that name. 😀But since Japan is "the land of the rising Sun", I guess they're proud to be Eastern. It's not a generic import name, it's a proud export name.

Your knurling preferences are safe with us! 😀

I’m a fan of micro brands and not concerned with resale. I’d pick the Lorier Neptune for a vintage style diver. But my first diver is a Scurfa Treasure Seeker

For me, Orients are the perfect mix of the classical and the original, but I also understand your feelings with generic designs - because that's exactly how I feel with many Chinese homage watches. Not copied/clomages, mind you! Proper homages. Like a Proxima 1697 - in theory a very nice dressy diver. Nice proportions, thin bezel, it took the best features from Christopher Ward and streamlined them. But for some reason, it doesn't work with me.

Or Spinnaker and its sister brands - again, true homages, but not appealing to me. Albeit less than that Proxima.

Honestly, if I was designing watches, I'd probably come up with something like the Treasure Seeker or Topside Crew. I don't like the bezel and that the hands are thinner than indexes, but otherwise it's top. 🔥

·

Kamasus are great, however, I am not a fan of the day date window on these models and overall, I think Loriel offers a better overall package.

·

Lorier — Vinatage vibes and the owners are super nice!

Yes, the calendar window is a prominent feature, sure to raise emotions.

By package - do you mean specifications, features, design, or execution?

Very cool. Interestingly, I like the bezel because it doesn’t look like many others. Oval indices and waffle dial texture help make it original.

There’s watches out there for everyone.

Yes, the dial is great! I would just change the proportions a little.

I'm not a fan of the bezel, because it reminds me of many Swiss divers. But without the small minute markers and the triangle... and the dot on top being bigger..

I know, I'm too demanding. 😅It's a lovely watch as is.

·

I would get the Lorier I like the looks of it the best and it’s a little bit more exclusive as in your not going to see as many ppl wearing them. I love the Oriants but they are like seiko very popular with a very big and getting bigger following. However I don’t think you could go wrong in any of the choices you have here.

·

Lorier for me. Prefer the dial indices, simpler bezel design, and 6-o’clock date.

·

Received my Lorier Neptune date about a week ago. Very happy with it!

·

I'd strongly suggest a Glycine Combat Sub. 200M WR, Swiss Made, SW200-1, Sapphire Crystal, very thin at under 11mm thick, and only about $100 more than the Orient.

·

Owned the Kamasu. The only watch I ever sold in less than a year. Yes, it's a spec monster for the money but little details slowly ate at me till I couldn't stand it on my wrist like the double framed day+date window(s)... and the lug width... And the lack of taper on the bracelet... the crown feels small... I could go on and on.

·

I personally wouldnt buy a day date watch unless I was wearing it every day or had it on a window

·

How about one of Citizens? NY0040 is a model that everyone seems to love. Or if you want that day date complication and even less money to spend NY0120

Image
·

I love my Kamasu, but I’d go for the Lorier.

·

Somehow, these don't sit well with me. Odd proportions... and I prefer central brushing over gradient.

The classic Promasters are better, but too modern for my taste. I do consider a solar variant of those.

·

I am a HUGE fan of #orient but in this case I chose #lorier

I personally whanna get a LORIER but I already have my ORIENT. ORIENT to me personally is an extremely well craftes dress watch!

One thing I thought about, I don’t know what would have I done if you have had #seiko as one of the options 😅
