Descriptive Brand Names

It always tickles my ear when I hear certain brand names because they either have meaning regarding time keeping or are puns on the subject. There are very few of them, often these cute names are reserved for model names with the brands being more seriously named after persons, places, or just made up (often using an "X"). Which is your favorite? Did I miss one?

Lathin - Pun of what?

"Lay Thin"

·

I don’t know it’s history but ”Embe de lux” seems like a stretch to far

Most obvious one I can think of is Seikosha which is formed from "Seiko"meaning success or exquisite and "sha" meaning house.

Edit:

How could I forget Swatch ??? Swiss watch it's right there😉

Amongst others there is Timex, Everite, chronoswiss, MVMT,

Fairly sure Durex is a play on durable, no idea how they came up with the name of the other one?

Given that you are the Autocrat of Time, are you proposing to charge any brand we mention with a licence fee? Is this covert information gathering, ahead of legal action? Just checking.

"Aristocrat of beauty. Autocrat of time." is an old Bulova slogan.

check Formex, officially coming from 'Forme Extrême", but it's not clear whether this related to the watch cases or the extreme fitness of the CEO, who is an horological James Bond

I am not sure that "Exquisite House" carries any watch related currency. It could be applied to any product, much like "acme" is.

Timex was trying to emulate that sweet success of Kleenex (not Rolex). Everite is a good one.

One that I had forgotten: AV-8.

Webster Clay Ball is not amused.

Sounds more like a promo for a French soap or shower gel, all that is missing is the customary note that it's sold in all the good pharmacies.

This isn’t really a pun, and I know they’re German, but I’m from South Texas:

Not a brand name but there’s the unfortunately named, wonderfully strange crowless (well, sort of) Futurematic from JLC.

There are some Chinese brands that fit here:

  • Steeldive, they are mostly making dive watches, and yes: from steel.

  • Ironwatch; see this on quite a few dials, not so sure there is a brand identity behind it

  • Escapement Time; given their name, they have way too many quartz watches, though they do make mechanical ones to

  • Skmei; yes, really. Apparently this is a transliteration from the Chinese name (pronounced something like shi-ke-mei), which apparently means Beauty of Time, or something of this ilk.

  • Cronos/Chronos. Two different brands, apparently. Chronos makes cheapos. Cronos makes divers, fliegers and dress watches, but they do not seem to make chronos.

Pretty sure that Cronos was the rename for Lugyu to appeal to the Western market, and that it was supposed to be a riff on the Greek god of time.
