G-SHOCK GWM5610-1 Review: The Watch That Ruined & Saved My Collection

This watch has absolutely Ruined my collection because I wear it so much everyday as a tool watch.

I got this when we got our little 8 week old teething lab puppy Zuko. I thought we took home a little Velociraptor. I wanted a durable watch that I didn't have to worry about around him & that I could take anywhere at a minutes notice.

Image

This watch lives separately to my overall collection as a tool. It doesn't stay in my watch box at all. It stays by the front door or on a metal work lamp by my living room window (to aide as an antenna) to catch Multi-Band 6 updates overnight.

This watch has also absolutely saved my collection because it is used as a tool. It makes wearing my other watches more special again. I can enjoy them more now each time I put them on. It also physically saved my other watches from those sharp puppy needle teeth. It has just as many bite marks as I do, but it hides them better.

Positives:

It is very light and comfortable, I oftentimes forget that I'm wearing it. I luckily have a good fit on the resin band so I'll keep it on its original band for now.

Obvious typical G-Shock durability. Puppy proof so far.

Solar charging & power saver mode is cool. I leave it in the sunlight to charge occasionally and I like that the screen turns off at night and turns on again when you pick it up.

The motion activated LED backlight is fantastic. When I bring my wrist up to look at my watch in low light, it turns on and the screen is very legible. Its great for nightly walks.

I really like the retro digital design. The red outline around the screen is a nice accent and the different colours of text are cool. You don't notice the screen being that busy after a while & the placement of the solar dial inside the red line is done very nicely. It's a nice feature packed interpretation of the original squares from the 80's.

Image

The stopwatch function shows the time in the top right sub window as well which is great. I don't have to cycle modes like I do with my other Casios.

Multiband 6 updates are neat. I like being able to set all my other watches to this one now.

Intuitive operation. Compared to a CasiOak, navigating all of this watch's features is quite easy.

Negatives:

The Resin band that it comes in is not particularly nice. It is soft enough for now, but when it inevitably stiffens overtime like all the other Casio straps I have, I'm going to put Jay's & Kay's metal lug adapters and throw it on a NATO or Silicone.

Multiband 6 reception is bad where I live. I spent a week troubleshooting by leaving it in different places overnight. I followed the directions provided with the watch but they didn't work.

It sits a little tall on the wrist, and the soft grippy resin catches sleeves quite often which is a little annoying.

Mineral crystal (better for shock resistance) has scratched a bit so far.

No anti reflective measures and the Digital display is blurry and then becomes illegible when you look at it from significantly off axis angles.

Overall, it's a great digital watch that can do so much more than I need it to. This watch has become an important everyday tool for me & it will carry meaning going forward because I got it at the same time we got our dog Zuko.

Great review, lots of helpful detail! I've been waffling on getting it - this might push me over the edge into finally buying. And great photos of the pup!

A very comprehensive and honest review imo. I don't usually tend to read reviews of watches I already own, but I would agree with your assessment. I do get multiband 6 where I live though. Thanks for taking the time to share, with good photos too 👌

Thanks. It's definitely worth it overall and has become my favourite G-Shock. I wasn't that keen on squares at first but it's really grown on me.

Good review, I’m about to add a 5610 to my collection!

·

I almost bought one of these today based on your post. It's gonna happen at some point, but wasn't really planning on it this close to the holidays.

Excellent review!

The other thing that's great with the U version is you can set the date to DMY which is a good thing.

Forgot to mention this, It was one of the first changes I made.

+1 to all your observations. This is the watch I wear to the gym every morning. When I get home and pick the watch for the rest of the day, I set it using the 5610. I'm also happy to see someone else carrying around an Olight! Mine has become indispensable EDC.

I have the same watch I bought about 2 months ago for my work watch. I pretty much agree with all your points. Luckily for me multiband if fine by me. I will also swap the band out one day. It's a great everyday watch. Nice objective review.

·

Great review. I have owned the predecessor to this model for 8+ years now, and it’s still ticking. I recently replaced the strap because the retaining piece/loop broke a while back, and it’s essentially a new watch now.

·

FINALLY you can change the date to DD/MM instead of the american format!

A trick I stole from WatchGeek is to hang your watch off some kind of metal bar, i.e. a pullup bar, a bike, etc and that might help improve reception. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wI4FwQMCN9w&pp=ygURd2F0Y2hnZWVrIGF0b21pYyA%3D

I recently picked up this watch too and it's easily one of my favorites! The problem is now I've begun eyeing more Japan specific models... like the full metal variants.

This is a great video, watched it too.

Reception was very spotty on my barbell, didn't work on shower curtain bar at all, but finally worked on a metal desk lamp near my south facing window.
