This is a great stepping off point. Great 37mm size, beautiful design. I got one for my 12 year old son for Christmas to hopefully give him the bug. I think it's starting to take. Good choice on your part.

Great little watch. The only slight drawback is the relatively low (30m) water resistance. Here's mine on a simple black leather strap. Most of the time it's on a grey/black NATO. It gets a LOT of wrist time

This was my gateway watch into mechanical watches - still love it! I would say “slippery slope,” but for me, there’s no slope anymore. It’s more of a free fall haha

I think this is the most misunderstood aspect of the water resistance rating. Here's a little guide to help with what you can do and can't do based on the rating (3 ATM is 30M):
So basically 30M rating means you can wash your hands and it's OK to walk outside if it's raining.
But don't take that watch into the shower (which you should never do anyway with most watches since the steam can penetrate the seals if they are not perfect) and don't fall into the pool or you risk water penetration to the watch.

I took a SNK809 to 17m (confirmed by a depth guage and Aqualand) with no problem whatsoever. The last couple of weeks I have been swimming laps with my Timex Waterbury as well (5 ATM water resistant).
Also, that thing about showering is a myth. Seals are designed to seal. If they are installed correctly, you won't have a problem. But showering with a watch is a bit gross becasuse salts and oils/fats can build up in nooks and crannies.

Yes, but it's a massively popular watch, has been for at least a decade, and I can't recall reading about one instance of even fog under the crystal.

I'm more likely to believe my own experiences with Seiko watches (I've owned maybe 20 or 30)!
(Sorry for the thread hijack @Aphanisis. It's an excellent watch, one of the greats. Swim with it, don't swim with it, whatever, just enjoy the hell out of it!)
This was also my first mechanical watch. I upgraded to a leather strap eventually. I still wear it regularly and get complements all the time. Great choice! Enjoy!
