Watches and wrist size

A couple of my coworkers asked me why I have such a small watch on my wrist? They talked about my alpinist ( 38 mm case which is the perfect size for me ). I didn’t want to explain them that you have to wear watches depending on your wrist size. I’ve felt that snobbery rising when I was thinking what to tell them so I didn’t. What about yourself? Did you have any “existential” problems like myself?😂

Take your watch off, whack them over the head with it and tell them to mind their own business 🤣 38mm isn't small, strange they would notice, unless you have large wrists making it look small?

·

Just tell them truth. You love the watch, so who cares what they think.

This rhetoric drives me mental and correct me if I’m wrong but it all stems from macho bullshit… what really is the kicker here is the same people who say “that’s too small” or “that’s a ladies watch” tend to hold people like soldiers (who wore 34mm watches) as the most macho of men.

Another along the same line as the soldiers is The Rolex Sub 6538, worn by Connery - known as “a man’s man” (whatever that is) playing James Bond… an arguably macho character. The watch has a diameter of 37.5mm. A very similar size to the bb54 which I’ve heard people complain is too small/a ladies watch.

It’s a watch. If you like it, wear it and bollocks to anyone else.

·

Just say "I like my watches to fit like X" and show how it fits. If someone keeps going after you say effectively "that's how I like it," they should go touch grass.

·

As someone who wears watches from 26 mm to 42 mm, wear what you want! 💪🏽

Got same question few times when wearing my vintage pieces. Never bothered to even comment or give feedback, especially if that claim comes from a guy wearing 47-51mm Garmin sport watch or 52-57mm Diesel fashion watch on app. 16-17cm wrist.

If they're rude enough to think they should school you on your watch choices, then you have every right to tell them how it really is:

  • Point out they're about 10 years behind watch fashion

  • It's not cool to have giant watches anymore - you look like a kid

  • Flash up a few snaps of Ryan Gosling wearing vintage Rolex

  • Leave them wondering what they're going to do with their 47mm Panerais..

·

I don't think it's snobbery but it's weird when I hear that only a small watch is elegant or that there is a "classic" size. There simply is no one-size-fits-all approach.

·

Tell them you aren't compensating for any shortcomings in other areas.

Follow that with a slow look down & up.

So I guess that the best retort to criticism is to engage in criticism 🤨

Bigger watches are just as much a preference as smaller watches are. I agree that they shouldn’t have pointed that out, but I’d say you are equally biased about watch size.

Just wear whatever you want and enjoy the hobby. Don’t worry about others.

Exactly, the point is that you wear what you like and if also fits your wrist then even better.

I’m not a snob and also not a liar 😂😂😂

My wife wears a 36mm Ballon Bleu, sometimes she slips on her mom’s 32 or 34mm quartz Omega that was purchased when her parents vacationed in Switzerland a million years ago, she also routinely wears a 41mm Tudor ceramic that used to belong to me, lately she enjoys the feel of some of my 44mm Panerai watches. She is normal size with slender wrists most intelligent person in my life who genuinely feels discussions about watch sizes to be goofy! When we started dating more than 40 years ago,she lectured me that my watches could not be anymore than a casual affectation if we were going to have a future together. IMO that tiny little gold tank did not do anything for Muhammad Ali, he would wear something more size appropriate today since we have so many more options. lol.

The best retort to ignorance is education.

Poor Adrian was being picked on, for being right! We can't let that slide.

·

I think it was ok in this situation to be a snob and tell them "what do you know about watches" - lol - i mean they asked for it

I wasn’t picked on😂😂😂it was just something that, I think, everyone who wears watches should know.

While everything you wear has a certain size why should it be different with watches? The answer to those co workers lies in their shoe sizes or are they wearing 66?

It’s not that mate. I was just curious if you guys have some stories about this subject.

·

Yeah my story is probably that I have made people crazy telling them that they should wear proper sizes :)

·

They inquired that your watch was too small but had nothing too say about how beautiful the Alpinist is? You should ask them where they got the crack they are obviously smoking.

·

My wrist is 8 inches and I wear watches between 38 and 47 millimeters with a perfect fit.

·

I'd say it's just a small watch kinda day.
