So maybe I am a little @#$%ing crazy, but I can't be the only one....right?

Question for my fellow watch junkies...

Does anyone else maintain a "retired" watch collection? I cant be the only one out here. How bazaar, crazy, goofy am I? Would love your thoughts and if you do have watches collecting against retirement, which ones?

Pictured from left to right, top to bottom my OGs are:

  1. Skagen - 202LSXM - Gifted to me at 16 by my girlfriend at the time (shhhh my wife doesn't know the backstory 😂)

  2. Victronix - 241332 - The first nice watch I bought and wore daily through college

  3. Nautica - Unknown Ref - Bought this on the one and only cruise I have ever been on

  4. Citizen Eco-Drive - GN-4W-S - Purchased in my early 20s after my very first work promotion

  5. Shinola - Runwell Chrono - Living in Michigan, I thought I needed it...but...its just too big (47MM)

  6. Gevril - Wallstreet 4950B - Always wanted a "Bat Girl" but that was and still is out of reach

  7. Fossil - Uknown Ref - Gift from my now wife

  8. Fossil - Unknown Ref - Gift from my now wife

While I don't wear these anymore, I do love looking back through them. Each has a unique and meaningful story along my collecting journey.

What say you, scholars?

Sorry… let’s talk about it…

Seems like a Friday session of watch addicts anonymous 😉

What's wrong with the Gevril? Sure it's an homage brand, but there's a lovely ETA 2893-2 in there!

·

I've got a couple of retired watches, but not an entire collection. I retired a Seiko dress quartz from the 80's with an integrated bracelet that no longer fits and a Timex Expedition that wasn't getting worn anymore... and by retired I mean they aren't in the watch box.

Nothing wrong with it at all. Just fell out of love with it and seemed to fade out of the rotations. But looking at it today is stirring lusty feelings again

I'm a sucker for water resistant GMTs -- I think that they're some of the most useful pieces in existence.

·

I had a retired watch collection until I joined WC and folks here are so encouraging and supportive of even watches I haven’t worn in years like my Casio Twin Sensor. Had no idea people would like that.😜

Totally agree! I guess my only real problem with this watch, is more with the brand itself. I've said it before, but Gevril's pricing (MSRP) is whack! $4k MSRP but you can buy them for $400-$600, which I did way back when.

·

I have never really thought of them in that way..but I think I am also.I have at lease a dozen watches sitting in the safe that I done even look at..how nuts is that...

·

Yip. I have draw full however i would be looking to unretire that Givrel. Thats a beast of a watch from a brand with serious history.

·

I have two. Both purchased early in the fever of collecting. Conflicted by them but I wind them up every now and then. I keep them in another room to hide my shame. I keep them to remind me that I should police myself when about to buy another watch.

·

I only keep 1, first vintage auto I purchased myself. The others have been sold, gifted or tossed.

Now...boxes on the other hand 🤫

·

I have a problem with letting go of any of my watches. I recently gifted my brother a citizen diver for Christmas and still want it back. 😂

·

I don't have retired I have a box for what's in rotation and a box that isn't currently in rotation. I also have a box that is just novilty and suvinoers only watches than get no wear because they were either gifted or bought as that.

·

I'm in the same situation but I have less watches in retirement. just a broked Swatch irony (my first "real" watch), a other quartz watch from my grandfather and my casio F-91W.

·

Yes! I have a box with #swatch watches that I like and two TAGs.... My all quartz box

Same. I have sold a few, but generally have a problem letting them go...

·

Yes. I have a second watch box of watches that were gifted to me, or watches that I lusted after but were hard to find but when I got them I found I didn’t wear them. I’m about to purge them all. Watches are for wearing. If you’re not wearing them then it’s better that they go to someone who will.

If each played a part in your life story, then keeping them can always be a conversation piece, whenever you're with your kids, family, and friends. Or when you're by yourself, you can recall the good or bad memories associated with them, including the lessons learned. At the end of the day, it's still up to you what you decide to do with them. Cheers! 🍻

Yes.

My collection consists of a watchbox with 6 in regular rotation. That's my complete collection.....I've also got a big watch box with maybe 20 in that's at my Dad's that are broken, family heirlooms (pocket watches) , unwanted gifts or just fell out of favour. 🤔

Well said. Cheers!

We can't wear everything we have... anything that falls out of rotation... is essentially "retired". That includes worn out or broken pieces as well. But for those still working, you'll never know when you get the itch (or even need) to try them on again...

·

Yes, if these watches have meaning for you, keep them, and if not sell them or throw them away, or even better, give them away. And I just saw this on my little Seiko 5. It says "Seiko Time Corp" on the rotor. And we hear that we can always get more money, but we can never get more time. But it looks like to me that as long as we have money, we can buy more time, at least from Seiko. So whenever you or someone else questions your latest watch purchase you can truthfully say that you're just buying time.
